How School Hourss Should Be Changed While Attending School
Everything is quiet. I've finally fallen asleep. Then, suddenly, an unearthly blaring alarm fills the room. It's 5:30; time to wake up for school. My outreached hand fumbles over the buttons of the digital clock, desperately seeking the snooze button. The sun hasn't even come up as I slowly begin to roll out of bed. I begin my morning routine, still half asleep, and arrive at school close to 7:00. By first block everyone has lost the energey they might have gained from breakfast, and now begin to put their heads down on the desks to sleep. The rest of the day goes about the same way; sleep deprived teens rebelling against their equally sleep deprived teachers. How is anybody supposed to function properly after recieving an average of six hours of sleep at night? Should school hours be changed after all of these years? It isn't exactly necessary. Somehow we all manage to get out of bed and attend school everyday at these early hours without any particular effect. Teenagers are at an age where they need more sleep than ever before. They grow almost as fast, if not faster, than babies. The only difference is, unlike infants, we have homework, exams, projects, and other comittments that require our extra time. A majority of students are involved in some type of after school activity. Wheter it be football, marching band, theatre, or academic team, these activities require extra time after school. If the school day was pushed back so would these activities. This would mean that some students don't get home until after it's dark. After school activities already put a lot of pressure on students, now they would be more stressed later on in the day. The stress and pressure of sports and other activities, added to that of school, makes it harder to finish homework and other

In a recent study at YHS 97.1% of students would rather start school later. Students should be able to start school later when they're awake. Students will have more time to eat in the morning instead of starving all day at school. Students will come with more energy instead of being dead at school. Students attendances would improve and reckless driving wouldn't occur so often. If school started later the increase on grades and attendances would go up.…

Sleep deprivation is a common struggle many adolescents confront daily in their lives. It is a chronic condition with severe negative consequences to the developing teenage body and its effects may be even more dire when combined with the stress of heavy schoolwork along with extracurricular activities. Professional doctors advise and recommend growing teenagers to sleep eight hours or more, however this proves to be rather very difficult with the interference of the standard school schedule starting early in the morning. One of the main reasons early school start times are bad for teenagers is that it makes them seriously sleep deprived. Have you ever been exhausted on a Monday morning, struggling to get up, well don’t worry, I have too? Schools should start later in the day so that students can get the recommended full 9 hours of sleep, because let’s face it, we all know most students don’t actually get enough sleep, but if school times were changed, say an hour ahead of current time, then students will be more attentive which will help them learn and stay focused in class, getting more sleep can help with their concentration, which would lead to better grades. Energy is also very important, if a student doesn’t have enough energy, they might fall asleep in class, which is a big problem. Lastly, if students don’t get enough sleep, they might be too tired, and skip breakfast,…

If you had the choice, would you choose to sleep or go to school? Wouldn’t you want school to start later so you could get your nine hours? Well, it’s not as ideal as it seems. For the past few years, the Littleton Public Schools district, along with other school districts around the country, discussed the idea of the change of school start and end times. For the most part of this school year, the district has started to ask parents and students for their opinions and to come up with different solutions that will appeal to everyone. One of the biggest reasons that the district would need to change the times befalls the lack of sleep that students receive. Pamela McKeever, the leader of a study of adolescent sleep said that, "...research explains…

The study also shows that the need for sleep is never greater in our lives than it is during adolescence, but yet the conflict between school and sleep is at it’s highest while teens are in high school. In conclusion, if the school start time is pushed back, our after school activities are pushed back, we will get home later and we will have less time to study and we will get less sleep. Starting school later in the morning does NOT give us more time to sleep. We will be forced to stay up later to study for the big test, to finish the project, and to do the thirty math problems we haven’t made a dent in yet because we haven’t had TIME. We will be waking up an hour earlier to finish homework we were too tired to get done the night before and we will end up getting less…
