In the wake of numerous cheating scandals, such as those at the University of Virginia and Harvard, many people have began to question the effectiveness of honor codes (sources C, D). The reason why this program appeals to me is that I will get to visit a place that I have never seen before. I will be able to view the German culture without stereotypes, and also live in the culture and learn from it. It would be like learning about a whole new world. When I go back home from Germany, if I get selected, I’ll be able to share whole new culture with my school peers. Most of my peers have never traveled past neighboring states, let alone the country. In turn, I would tell the people I would meet in Germany about my own culture and explain the American quirks and behaviors. I enjoy sharing my own culture with people who have never experienced it. My personality has always been adventurous, and I always enjoyed visiting new places…

The roots of honor codes can be traced back to the first founding universities in America. While not an official school requisite, many institutions of higher education have embraced them to promote honesty and integrity within their school community. At my own school, Saint Mary's College High School, the honor code even goes so far as to lay out possible punishments of suspension and expulsion for those who do not comply. However important the school's administration views the honor code, I support the elimination of it all together because it does nothing to help promote a positive learning environment.…

Sitting in the middle of class and all of a sudden you start nodding on and off. And you wonder why your eyes are closing in class. You missed all the information from the chapter which is going to be on the test which you didn’t hear your teacher announce was going to be tomorrow. After a week of continuous struggle in class trying to keep your eyes open causes you to drop from an A down to a C+. You try to explain to your parents why your grades dropped significantly, but they don’t believe you so they set up a meeting with your teacher and find out that you were falling asleep in class. Your parents believed that the reason you were falling asleep in class was because you were staying up late playing videogames, but in reality you were up late finishing your homework packets which apparently most of your teachers assigned on the same day. Most teachers who assign busy work as homework do not understand that they are the ones who contribute to the lack of sleep of students.…

“[E]ducation… is a process of living and not a preparation for future living.” (My Pedegogic Creed, 1929). John Dewey correctly summed up education in that quote. No matter how hard you try, you cannot escape from trying to get an education that prepares for future living and not learn something along the way. Everyone uses what they have learned through education every day, from a toddler to a senior citizen. College is a part of education where most students think that they are only preparing for their future career, while in reality, they are actually putting the skills they have learned to use each day in class. From the education occurring at a young age, to the skills learned from school, education is something that is used in everyday living.…
