Heroes Don't Run: A Novel of the Pacific War written by Harry Mazer. This is a fiction story with a lot of action and history. Reading this story made me feel like I was really there along the side of Adam during the Pacific war. Adam is determined to serve his country in honor of his father, a naval officer, who was killed in Pearl Harbor. Adam enlisted in the Marines hoping that serving his country would be honoring his father’s wishes. It was what his father would have expected of him. Adam felt like he had to do his part by serving in the Pacific war before it ended. What Adam didn’t know was that war was not at all like he expected.

He served in World War I and understood why his grandson wanted to sign up so bad. Adam’s grandfather signed him up even though he too did not want to lose him because he had already lost his son, Adams father to

My son the Marine gives the audience a journey of all sorts of feelings a parent could go through when a child decides to enlist in the service. Frank Schaeffer is the author who starts his story about his son, John who sees the Marine recruiters showing up at their home. Frank describes how he couldn’t comprehend on how John could relate to these stern, clean men with such flawless uniforms. This uneasy feeling made his wife feel uncertain about her son enlisting which promoted her to ask “What will he get out of being a Marine?” The response from the recruiters was “He’ll be a United States Marine, ma’am!” Frank and his wife may not have understood what this met at this time but all that mattered was their son, John understanding that if he wanted to join the military that he wanted to be in the United States Marine Corps. Another day, another run. Far from being dull, though, Senri saw it as yet another opportunity to push herself. So it was that she found herself out by Central Park turning the streets into her playground, her medical supplies strapped to her legs as usual. A good thing, too, because from the sound of that explosion, she was going to need them! Curiosity and concern both piqued, she made a beeline for its source, helped along by the smoke already trailing into the sky. Gathering the wind about herself, she kicked in a burst of speed, feet barely touching the ground. As an afterthought, she fumbled out the polarized ski goggles that served to conceal her identity, slipping them over her head with a wince as the already fastened straps pull at her hair. She tugs her hood up just in time to round a corner... and skid to a stop at the scene unfolding before her. "All this only a few blocks away. What are the odds...?" In…

In Pearl Harbor and the Coming of the Pacific War by Akira Iriye, the author explores the events and circumstances that ended in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, an American naval base. Iriye assembles a myriad of primary documents, such as proposals and imperial conferences, as well as essays that offer different perspectives of the Pacific War. Not only is the material in Pearl Harbor and the Coming of the Pacific War informative of the situation between Japan and the United States, but it also provides a global context that allows for the readers to interpret Pearl Harbor and the events leading up to it how they may. Ultimately, both Pearl Harbor and the subsequent Pacific War between Japan and the U.S. were unavoidable due to the fact that neither nation was willing to bow down to the demands of the other.…

The history of war is what many spend time reading about in textbooks. Few, however, experience war and all that it encompasses. David Leckie, a marine during World War II, uses his book, Helmet for My Pillow, to share with readers the truth of what it was like to be a soldier. Rather than skimming the surface of his time on Parris Island and the Pacific Islands, he goes into unmatched, excruciating detail; every trench dug, every shot fired, and every fallen soldier passed was recounted by Leckie. Setting this story apart from any other, the first-hand accounts of combat, unlikely descriptions of the day-to-day actions of the soldiers, and the heart that Leckie intertwines with each part of his story all combine to make this thought-provoking,…

It's a Friday afternoon. Your children are coming off of their bus after school. You are looking out the window at them and as the bus speeds off, you realize it's just a memory, and your children fade away into barely a mist. You think about how you miss them being your children, and you miss being proud of them for every single thing they do. You miss when they were kids, when you would kiss their cheeks before they left the house. You miss when they would make you feel better after a bad day at work. You hold their memory in your heart. “They aren't gone, they're just away,” you like to think. But you know that's not true, you've ignored the two tall military men for months. Your kids were drafted early into war. They were old enough, but they didn't go through any training. They were weak, you blame yourself. You go on each day wishing you could have done somethings different. But you can't, so you choose to ignore it. You go on, because you know that that's what they would have wanted. You are powerful, you are brave, and you are beautiful.…

This story has made me think about all the people have made many sacrifices to serve and protect this country from within the military. It makes me think about all the brave men and women who took a leap and choose to enter the military to give their lives to service and who are willing to enter a war to protect the freedoms that we pride ourselves upon in this country. It makes me reflect upon the hardships that those who are fighting to protect this nation are facing and what they must overcome to accomplish the missions they were sent out to do. This story shows that life for them isn’t easy and there is struggle, tears, and bloodshed that comes with their job. It reminds me how thankful we should be for what they do and how much of their…

Corporal Harris’s voice played in my ear “If you tell anyone they won’t believe you because I am the captain’s boy.” So because I was new I didn’t want to make waves. So even though others knew what happened to me, the right people didn’t. I held my head up high and continue to do my job, have relationships and living even though I was hurting inside, I kept living because I had a job to do. He was not the only who took advantage of me, there were others one in particular forced me to jack him off. Again, I stayed silent and did my job. My relationships were full of lies and deceit verbal abuse and a whole lot of cheating not always on my part. Then Operation Just Cause happened this sent me to the jungle for 3 months, where we prepared fuel system supply points so that the aircrafts like cobras came to hot refuel as they bombed Panama City. The conflict was over by January and my time was soon up after two years, I was assigned to go back to the states. I had to keep pushing, I had to put all that behind me. I had a son to raise and I had to leave even though deep inside I wanted to give up. I had to live on, I had to, and I was proud on the outside but screaming on the…
