Hamlet Act IV Literary Essay
William Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet, is thought by many readers to have the major theme of revenge. Although revenge is a significant part of the play, it is not the main theme. Throughout the play there are many ways Shakespeare uses dramatic irony and for each one there is always a cause and effect. He uses this Cause and effect to target the audience and to keep them engaged in the play. An example of cause and effect would be in Act IV, Scene IV (IV, iv, 35-70). In this scene it shows Hamlet and his liking of Fortinbras and how angry he is at himself. The cause is from the audience while the speech and other things are the effect. The cause and effect from this scene and the soliloquy is one of the ways Shakespeare connected with his audience, which was in his time the Elizabethan era.
Through this speech Shakespeare’s feelings are made by using Hamlet to portray his message into the Elizabethan audience. It is clear in this speech that Shakespeare thinks that killing and wasting the lives of man during war is unnecessary. In the scene one of Hamlets captain says, “we go to gain a little patch of ground that hath in it no profit but the name. To pay five ducats, five, I would not farm it” (IV, iv, 20), this was said before Hamlets speech and it describes the insanity of this war between Norway and the Poles lead by Fortinbras. The land they were fighting for had very little gain for both, but it meant victory to them and that is why they wanted it.
In many occasions the audience knows that Hamlet has been having a hard time of figuring out what to do with Claudius, where he should get his revenge and kill him or not, he truly does not know what to do yet. To predict or to figure what he will do Shakespeare makes the last soliloquy in the play critical for the audience because it is the only way of understanding the development of Hamlet as a character.     Throughout the scene Claudius depicts a personality that evaluates situations and makes choices out of desire without much concern for consequence. Although Claudius does show a little bit of concern for consequence, he generally acts from an “inner-child” psyche. In the scene, Claudius plots with Laertes and acts quickly out of a sense of DESIRE and makes a plan to kill Hamlet. Demonstrated in the lines; “A sword unbated, and in a pass of practice, Requite him for your father.” (4.7.137 - 140) And “I will do’t. And for that purpose I’ll anoint my sword. I bought unction of a mountebank, So mortal that, but dip a knife in it, Where it draws blood no cataplasm so rare, Collected from all simples that have virtue Under the moon, can save the thing from death That is but scratched withal. In these lines, Claudius and Laertes plan to kill hamlet by sharpening a fencing blade and dousing it with a poison that will cripple upon contact.     Hamlet is ashamed of himself because he continues to say that he will act and kill Claudius but unremittingly finds an excuse to not go through with his plans. Hamlet sees Young Fortinbras taking action and so Hamlet states, “How all occasions do inform against me, / And spur my dull revenge” (IV.iv.31-32). This shows Hamlets irritation towards himself and states that everything reminds him of his incomplete revenge on Claudius. Seeing Young Fortinbras with his army to fight for what is said to be something insignificant makes Hamlet admire him, he expresses, “Exposing what is mortal and unsure / To all that fortune, death, and danger dare, / Even for an egg-shell” (IV.iv.50-53). In this passage Hamlet states that Young Fortinbras is taking action even for a small piece of land that does not mean much to him while Hamlet cannot even take action to avenge his fathers death. Finally, Hamlet vows that he will stick to a plan to kill Claudius and finally grant his ghost fathers wish. After Fortinbras prompts Hamlets feelings in this direction, at the end of his soliloquy, Hamlet states, “O, from this time forth, / My thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth” (IV.iv.64-65). Hamlet is saying that he will think only about how to kill Claudius and make no excuse to stray away from this plan. Thus, displaying Hamlets new and only focus is to kill Claudius after seeing how cowardly he is acting compared to Young Fortinbras, who is the reason of Hamlets soliloquy. Therefore, Hamlet is ashamed of himself after seeing Young Fortinbras take action so quickly and this prompts Hamlet to vow to go through with his plans to avenge his father’s death and finally slay the current Kind Claudius.…

    Hamlet does not initially have a strong enough will to act solely on revenge.
