Negative Side Effects of Hair Dye Products
In this report, you’ll read about hair dye and its negative side effects. The first section of this report I explain the three main types of hair dyes. Next, the negative side effects of hair dye products are mentioned and elaborated. After that, safety tips and precautions are given. Finally, the conclusion will tie it all together. This is my research report on how hair dye products can cause various, life threatening side effects, like cancer, after use.
First, there are three categories all hair dyes fall into. The first category is temporary dyes. Temporary dyes normally last 2-3 washes and covers only the surface of your hair.

Studies in normal people include the following cancers: bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL), leukemia, bone marrow cancer, and breast cancer. However, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), there is lack of evidence to further prove hair dyes as cancer causers. Likewise, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) says hair dyes are not classified as cancer causers, but they do say “some chemicals that are or were used in hair dyes as ‘reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens.’” (27) Even with little evidence of hair dyes being carcinogens, everyone should still be aware that there is the possibility.
Concerns of carcinogenic hair dyes in humans is on the rise. The most common types of dyes are dark semi-permanent and permanent dyes. Through medical research, it has been found that darker permanent dyes are more likely to be carcinogens. Over the years, reported cases of certain cancers, caused by hair dyes, has increased drastically. Most cases were from personal use and hairdressers. This might not be such a surprise since most dye producers use more than 5,000 different chemicals in their dyes. Yet another reason why concerns of carcinogen from hair dyes is

First, follow all directions carefully, and read everything. Second, you should always do a patch test before every use, even if it’s the same dye you’ve used. Third, always wear gloves, sometimes the package will say there is no need for gloves, however it is still a great idea to wear some. Forth, never mix two different dye brands together. Also, make sure the dyes you’re mixing together is safe when combined. Fifth, never dye anything other than what the package says (never dye eyebrows or eyelashes). By following these safety tips, your hair dying should go

Dyes, which used on material such as cotton, silk, wool, and nylon appears to have color due to the partial light absorption in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Chromophores, derived from Greek, Chroma meaning color and phoros meaning bearer makes light absorption feasible. Dyes contain both chromophore molecules and auxochrome molecules; chromophore molecules include unsaturated groups, for instance carbon-carbon double bonds, azo, nitro, carbonyl, or akyl. Auxochrome molecules are comprised of groups such as amino, alkoxy, phenolic, sulfonyl, and carboxyl. Some examples of dyes are Malachite Green-which includes an amine group and ammonium, Para red-which includes nitro, azo benzene, phenol, and Congo red which includes an amino group, azo benzene, and sulfonate. Some molecules are colorless (azo compounds) or do not absorb dyes easily, therefore they conjugate. To understand conjugation, it is important to understand groups connect in such a way that makes them form a system, also the greater the amount of conjugation in a molecule the more the absorption of the molecule is…

Another thing that Toxic Bust showed was that the increase of the use of cosmetics and certain skin care products can have an affect on a person’s chances of getting cancer. The website The Future of Health: NOW lists ten chemicals in common beauty aids that can cause not only cancer, but pose other health risks to consumers. It would be best to once again, as with household cleaners, to avoid these products and use only those that do not contain these hazardous chemicals.…

This experiment investigated the effects of bleach and dye on the tensile strength of hair. The hypothesis stated that the healthy, untouched hair would be able to hold the heaviest amount of weight. The dyed hair would hold more weight than the bleached hair, but less than the normal hair. The bleached hair would be the weakest, holding the least amount of weight. The results supported this hypothesis. This is because the strong chemicals that were applied to the hair, penetrated, stripped and changed the hair’s natural composition. This in the end weakened the hair, giving the results that were found. This experiment could be improved in many ways for more accurate results, such as using a smaller weight like rice and measuring the tape and…

Inherited cancer is associated with DNA, all inherited cancers are related to the Genes, but some of the genetic changes are the result of environmental exposures that damage DNA . These exposures include substances, such as chemicals in tobacco smoke, or radiation such as radio ultraviolet rays from the sun. Some people are born with a gene mutation that they inherited from their mother or father. This damaged gene puts them at a higher risk for cancer to occur. When cancer occurs because of an inherited gene mutation, it is referred to “hereditary cancer”. For example the most common inherited syndrome that increase cancer risk for colon cancer is called hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer(HNPCC), or lynch syndrome. People with this syndrome have a high risk of colorectal cancer. However, when we talk about environmental factors people can avoid some cancer causing exposures, such as tobacco smoke, and the sun’s rays. But other factors are harder to avoid, specially if they are the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, or materials that we use in our daily living. Some examples are nickel compounds a occupational exposure is mainly through inhalation of dust particles and fumes or through skin contact. The exposure in nickel compounds is associated with increased risks of lung cancer, and nasal cancer. Another example is…

I’ve always wanted to dye my hair fun colors. My older sister Kayla used to dye her hair colors when she was in high school so I wanted to do it too. At the school I used to go to, you could not have any unnatural hair color, I couldn't wait to get into high school so I could dye my hair. I asked and asked my parents for weeks over the summer if and when I could dye my hair. After a very long time of asking, they finally said I could. Since I didn’t want to be too expensive and go to a salon, I went to my friend Cindy who knows how to do hair and stuff to dye mine lavender. About two or three days before the first day of school, we started the hair dying process. On the first day, we did two lightening treatments to make my hair very blonde…

Hair coloring or lightening is the practice of changing the color of hair. During lightening, hair goes through various stages until it reaches the ideal orange/gold color. Lightening time varies, depending on natural hair color. The darker the hair, the longer the lightening time needed. Medium brown hair on average takes somewhere around 40 minutes to lighten. Dark brown hair takes somewhere around fifty minutes to lighten. Darkest brown hair takes around sixty minutes to lighten. And black hair takes around sixty minutes to lighten. That is just on average and can vary a bit depending on the person s hair.…
