Henry, one of the main characters, constantly narrates the film and helps provide a more intimate look into the lifestyles of the gangsters. Typically, gangster films focus on one main aspect of the main character’s lifestyle. Often it has to do with the violent aspect of the film, but Scorsese takes a step away with his focus on the day-to-day lifestyle of the mafia families. His emphasis on the personal lives is only reinforced by the real-life personas depicted on the…

As of today, over thirty, well known critics would consider Shawshank Redemption to be the greatest movie of all time. Although the film has been given this title, director and writer Frank Darabont knows the true genius behind this story is writer, Stephen King. Stephen King is mostly known for his horror, suspense books, but this time he wrote a book about Andy Dufresne, a banker from Maine who is wrongly charged with murdering his cheating wife and her lover. King writes “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption” in the first person narrative, in the form of a monologue written by the character, Red. Throughout the whole story Red is presenting us with his recollection of imprisonment and the story of Andy Dufresne. One thing noting about how King placed Red as our narrator is that many of the things Red speaks about comes from rumors he claims he heard around the prison. This goes to show us that King intentionally placed an unreliable narrator to hold our hands through the story.…
In the eyes of Suzanne Wong, Vito Corleone is a man who deserves to be admired. He is a man who does well and expects nothing less in return. In Wong’s essay, she constantly brings up the deeds he does for everyone. Her reasons about why Don Vito Corleone is such a great role model were very well explained and detailed. She builds up Vito’s character so others can view him as a god like figure, hence why his nickname is The Godfather. I do agree with her on some topics, but at the same time I disagree. I agree with Wong when she says friendships are important, and Vito really showed how important it was. In addition, I agree with her argument about traditional values. What I don’t necessarily agree with is what she said about success and how the Don achieved it by himself. So therefore I mainly agree with Wong but at the same time I disagree just a little. I agree with Corleone being a good role model because he values friendship and traditional values but I don’t agree that he is because his success all resulted from violence.…

In the movie The Green Mile there are 3 different sociological theories and concepts that are useful in considering how societies look at behaviors in life within the time and place. One theory you will see is that Emile Durkheim known as the functionalist applies throughout the movie. Terms that you will see in this movie include: conflict theory which is a theoretical framework that views society as an unequal system that brings about conflict and change. (pg. 8) Also you will see alienation which refers to a person of powerless, meaningless, and general criticism toward the political process. (pg 259) Lastly you will see segregation which is forced separation because of factors such as race, gender, or ethnicity. (pg 183) The story of this movie is about the execution of John Coffey, a wrongly accused man who has a gift that allows him to heal the wounded and sick. It is called The Green Mile because the floor that went to the execution chair was green. A guard named Paul becomes close to John and realizes the true moral of the story.…
The 1957 film Twelve Angry Men serves as an excellent example demonstrating sources of power and influence tactics in leadership. At the start, the Foreman of the Jury sits at the head of the table and assigns each juror a number. He is using a legitimate source of power because he holds the position title and serves as a formal authoritative figure for the jury. The Foreman also facilitates the initial voting and discussion on the reasons why each jury member felt that way. The jury was almost unanimous, with the exception of Juror #8 who won’t vote guilty. His leadership skills and tactics are very apparent early on in the film, as he suggests the group not be so quick to move on. Instead of jumping on the band wagon, he voices his opinions and doubts because a man’s life is on the line. He used several different influence tactics while defending the boy on trial. He started with some personal appeals by talking about how the boy was abused by his father and grew up in the slums. This information sparked juror number 5 to start doubting the boy being guilty because he could relate to his situation. After some discussion, he instilled a new voting system where everyone’s votes were anonymous. Juror number 8 even suggested that his vote not count to give the group a sense of consensus. I feel like this may have been an attempt at ingratiation influence because he was making it seem he cared about what the group wanted and would sacrifice his opinion if no one else agreed. This is also an example of an exchange because he was making a deal with the fellow members of the jury. Following this vote, juror number 8 began using rational persuasion by showing a similar knife, setting up a mock apartment to see if the older gentleman’s story was possible, getting the jury to think about the train and the amount of time it takes it to pass by, etc. Juror 8 identifies some flaws and inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case, but he allowed the jury to make their own doubts…
The main genre idea of the production is to create an authentic Gangster production about two different gangs selling drugs for money. The audience will gain a better understanding of about what a Gangster film. The audience can learn life lessons from the plot we have created about gangsters. One of the lessons that can be learnt is that business is business; it’s not personal because its very important to take emotions out of your decisions because emotion clouds your judgment and when you make a decision out of fear, you are acting from a position of weakness, not strength. The audience can gain an understanding of how some Gangsters life's actually are in real life.…
The Green Mile is a book about miracles and belief in the seemingly impossible. Paul Edgecombe, the narrator of the story, is a prison guard at Cold Mountain Correctional Facility working in Block E, death row. This block is nicknamed "The Green Mile" because of the green tiles on the floor - the path that an inmate must walk from his cell to the room where the electric chair awaits. Edgecombe, a decent man, treats each prisoner with respect. Paul and the other guards are riled all through the course of the book by Percy Wetmore, a sadistic guard who enjoys maddening the prisoners. The other guards have to be civil to him despite their loathing of him because he is the nephew of the Governor's wife. When Percy is offered a position at the nearby Briar Ridge psychiatric hospital as a secretary, Paul thinks they are finally rid of him. However, Percy refuses to leave until he is allowed to oversee an execution, so Paul tentatively allows him to run Del's. So, what did happen at Delacroix’s execution, who was accountable, and why?…
