Flight Nurse Scholarship Essay
The true tipping point that led me to pursue nursing specifically was during my deployment. Upon seeing my friend Stephen, a Navy Corpsman, trying to revive a man who had flat lined twice while we were trying to fly him to the nearest hospital 6 hours away. When that man's life was in my friend's hands, he didn't freeze, hesitate, or panic. Like muscle memory, he quickly reverted to what he was taught while trying to keep the man stable, responsive, and reassuring him that he was going to be okay. It’s one thing to learn basic combat life-saving techniques in training, but to implement it in real life situations with someone’s life on the line is a completely different story, a story that I someday want to participate in. However, my curiosity in the healthcare field didn’t just spark over night. As I was growing up, I remember helping my grandparents with their medicine and assisting them with anything they would need upon visiting us. I used to listen to my parents talk about my grandparent's illnesses and how their home in the Philippines wasn’t “the most ideal” place for healthcare. This way I could combine my knowledge from flying and working on aircrafts while serving in the military with the necessary skills and knowledge that I will attain from the nursing program. Then maybe with all the necessary requirements accomplished from training, schooling, and working it will eventually lead me to one day become a nurse anesthetist or practitioner. I recently discovered the program through a friend and with careful consideration and diligent research of all schools in the area; St. Luke’s seemed as the one of the top nursing program candidates to apply for. After attaining this knowledge, one step in achieving my goal was to apply to the St. Luke’s Nursing School
