There are multiple benefits of FDI to host countries, such as Germany in the Opel-GM case. Benefits include capital inflow, technology, management, and job creation. Capital inflow can help improve the host country’s balance of payments, which measures payments to other countries and receipts to other countries. Technology creates beneficial technology spillovers that domestically diffuse foreign technical knowledge and processes. This also helps to stimulate competition in host countries, as the demonstration effect takes place where local rivals observe the technology and attempt to imitate it. Next, advanced management know-how is significant because many countries, specifically developing, have a difficult time developing a world-class management level without the help of FDI. Finally, in reference to job creation as a benefit of FDI to host countries, Peng states, “FDI creates a total of 80 million jobs, which represent approximately 4% of global workforce” (88).…

On the basis of previous studies of foreign direct investment (FDI) in insurance services industries by Moshirian (1997 and 1999), this study applies the similar model and variable with those previous studies to present analysis and discussion about FDI in insurance services industries in America from 1987 to 1998. As the extension on prior studies, this study found that the relative wage rate of the US versus the source countries, and FDI in manufacturing industries both are highly important determinants of FDI in insurance services industries in America in statistic. However, this result is different from Moshirian’s (1997), due to majority of factors which are valued important in his study are unimportant in this study. The disparity between different results indicates that along with the changes of political environment, economic climate, investors’ behaviors and methodological limitation, there are disparate determinants in different periods. As a result, it is necessary to testify it in further investigations.…

Russia was a monarchy, ruled by 'Tsars ', for most of recorded history. (Early Russian history is complex -- it includes invasions by Swedish Vikings from the West and Mongols from the East. Christianity arrived in about 1000 AD, and there were Tsars in Moscow after about 1400 AD. Some of the more important Tsars were Ivan IV (called 'the Terrible ' because he was pretty, well...terrible), Peter I (called 'the Great ' -- he built St. Petersburg and turned Russia into a military power for the first time), and Catherine II (also called 'the Great ' -- she was an 'enlightened despot ' and a friend of Voltaire 's).…

The Russian Economy emerged from the upheaval of the 1990s as a market where power was inadequately dispersed among the oligarchs, formal regulating institutions were scarcely in force and the state assumed too much of a role in an economy that was to run on free market principles. A decade later, there have been minimal reforms despite the widespread political rhetoric about Russia being integrated into the world economy. How has the absence of a fully developed free market and dominance of Oligarchs proven to be an impediment to the Economic growth? How has the relationship between them and the Russian government changed over time? What are some of the malpractices of the domestic economy? These are some questions that help us determine how the world views the economy in Russia and how it limits foreign investment.…

Foreign Direct Investments are long term capital holdings directly invested in one country by another country. These foreign direct investments can be either outwards or inwards. The outward foreign direct investment is also referred to as investments abroad and is usually supported by the government against various types of risks associated with the investment1. It is also able to enjoy various types of incentives such as tax incentives. These are usually the investments invested by the country in to a foreign country2. The inward foreign direct investments are the investments invested by a foreign country in to the country1. Foreign direct investments can also be in the form of mergers and acquisitions, where a firm in a foreign country acquires a firm in the host country and obtains the power to make strategic decisions concerning the firm. Uncertainty Avoidance Index (UAI) Empirical studies of Naumov and Puffer (68 points) as well as Bollinger (92 points) show that Russia is high on uncertainty avoidance. High points in Bollinger study reflect the economic and political stagnation in 1980s. Centuries of tsar history and egalitarianism where decisions and equality has been handed out through a set organizational layout has brought about preference for social order and authoritative hierarchy. There would be a greater level of preference for tried and tested methods than experimenting with the unknown. This can also be attributed to the earlier sense of security experience by the citizens who were guaranteed job security and a certain standard of living. All this transformed due to the change in Russian society into a marketoriented economy and a more civil society. It gave rise to greater uncertainty and forced decision making on the individual. Equally significant is the ability of rural and urban dwellers to survive challenging conditions of land, climate, and politics. Tens of millions of families depend on food they grow for themselves. The changes observed recently could interpret that the Russian mind-set was certainly changing due to the advent of perestroika.…

Nearly after 20 years and the fall of the Soviet Union, the shape of Russia, its principal successor state, remains unsolved. As well as Russia’s relationship with the West. Though the intense U.S.-Soviet competition of the Cold War is over, Russia has not become the permanent partner that many on the outside hoped would emerge after the Cold War’s end. The United States and Europe have taken issue with many elements of Russia’s domestic path, regional and international posture, including its democratic exercise, energy-related activities in Europe, pose on Iran’s nuclear program, and war in the 2008 due to the Russia-Georgia conflict. A principal factor enabling this assertiveness in recent years has been Russia’s strong economic growth. Since 2008, though, Russia, like many other countries, has experienced a deep economic crisis. The main problem here is how the crisis affected Russia and how the Moscow interfered to help Russia stabilize and stand against this crisis and overcome it.…
