Family Relationships In The Outsiders
Family relationships are tested in S.E. Hinton’s, The Outsiders. Hinton uses conflict to reveal characteristics between Pony and his brother Darry, which are kill, rough, and caring . Loving but cold, Darry tells Pony that he will kill him if he gets into trouble. “Darry would kill me if I got into trouble with the police” (1). Darry won’t literally kill Pony if he gets in trouble, Darry will just be very angry at him because if they do get in trouble their family will be separated. Pony and Darry’s relationship is not just cold but it’s rough too. Hinton shows how rough they are in the book which reads, “...Darry and Dad were brothers instead of father and son. But they only looked alike, my father was never rough on anyone without meaning

The main character of “The Outsiders” was Ponyboy Curtis, the younger brother of Darry and Sodapop Curtis. Ponyboy is very unique from all of the other characters, they are all unique. He isn’t the tuff like Dally, the pet like Johnny, the leader like Darry, the silly one like Sodapop, the wisecrack like two-bit, or even the confident and arrogant one like Steve. Ponyboy is quiet, smart, young, and kind. One of Ponyboys obstacles in the book was his brother Darry, the leader of the gang. “I could tell it was Darry though - partly because of the voice and partly because Darry’s always rough with me without meaning to be. ‘ “I didnt mean to!” Darry shouted… “Thats all i hear out of you! Cant you think of anything?” “Darry…” Sodapop began, but…

    Darry And Soda

Darry and Soda had different points of view on how to interact with their brother Ponyboy. On page 2, the books states, “Soda’s never hollering at me all the time the way Darry is, or treating me as if I am six instead of fourteen.” From this quote, the reader is told that Darry treats Ponyboy differently than Soda. It can be inferred that Darry is more strict with Ponyboy while Soda may not be as strict. On the other hand, “Soda’s always happy-go-lucky and grinning, while Darry’s hard and firm and rarely grins at all.” (The Outsiders, pg. 2) This quote shows another example of how Soda is different from Darry because it shows Soda being more joyful and relaxed, but Darry is more stern and not warm. Furthermore, the way both brothers treat Ponyboy demonstrates Hinton’s theme that family is there to support each other at all times because both brothers clearly care about Pony but show it in different…

My essay is about the power of siblings. Both in The outsiders and my essay Siblings bond over death or the thought of death. In The Outsiders Ponyboy and his brothers, including the greasers bonded over the death of his parents and Jonny, their good friend. It’s sad but true, people tend to get closer when they realize how short life is. My brother and I bonded over the fact that we would have to help my mom together. Being able to have someone there for you can give you a sense of safety because believe or not the closest person in your life should be your sibling. I feel bad for people who don’t have older siblings or lost them because they will never know what it’s like to have someone who already went through what you’re going through.…

I think a simple answer to your question is yes. Although some stories may cast aside the older characters or not even include them in the first place, there are some stories where the mother or father character is an important part of the overall narrative and even drives the story forward. In stories where there are a lack of older characters, there is usually a character that can be singled out as an "adult" character even if they fall into what we consider the YA range. In The Outsiders for example, this was the character of Darry. He's supposed to be a greaser and everyone considers him to be one, but with his level of maturity and age he is elevated to something more.…

Darrel (Darry) Curtis is 20 years of age and is legal guardian of his brothers, Ponyboy Curtis and Sodapop Curtis, due to his parents dying in a car wreck 8 months before the events in the book take place. ‘Darry is six feet two, and broad-shouldered and muscular. He has dark brown hair that kicks out in front and a slight cow lick in the back-just like Dad’s- but Darry’s eyes are his own.’ (Page 7) Darry never got the chance to go to College as the family couldn’t afford it and he doesn’t have enough time between looking after his brothers, and working two jobs. ‘But we just didn’t have the money for him to go to college, even with the athletic scholarship he won. And now he didn’t have time between jobs to even think about college.’ (Page 20) During this novel, we perceive Darry as being unpleasant & cold; ‘Darry isn’t ever sorry for anything he does. It seems funny to me that he should look exactly like my father and act exactly the opposite from him.’ (Page 7), But that is only the protagonists (Ponyboy’s) opinion of Darry. Later on in the novel, Pony realises that everything that Darry does, is for his family.…
