Experiment: Turgor in Potato Tissue
Experiment: Turgor in Potato Tissue 1. We labelled three test tubes A, B, C, D and added initials of people in our group. 2. Used a syringe or graduated pipette to put 20 cm3water in tube A and 10 cm3 in tube B. 3. Put 20 cm3 of 17% solution in tube C and 10 cm3 in tube B; put 20 cm3 pure sucrose solutions in tube D. 4. Working on the dissecting board I cut the ends off large potato. I was careful with the knife and cut it onto the dissecting board away from myself. 5. Used a cork borer to obtain 4 cylinder of potato tissue and pushed the potato tube out of the borer using a pencil. 6. Cut all these potato cylinders to same length using a scalpel-cut carefully away from my body. 7. I recorded the initial length of the potato cylinders on my result table. 8. Then I also measured the mass of each potato cylinder by placing in onto measuring scale and recorded the mass in the result table. 9. Afterwards the potato cylinder were placed into each test tube A, B, C, D. Leave it for 24 hours. Tubes | Initial Mass /g | Final Mass/g | Initial Length/mm | Final length/mm | A | 2.9g | | 55mm | | B | 2.9g | | 55mm | | C | 3.0g | | 55mm | | D | 3.0g | | 55mm | | Theory Osmosis is the movement of water across a partially permeable membrane.

Theory and Predictions

A- Pure Water
B- 4.26% glucose
C-8.5% glucose solution
D-34% glucose solution

In tube A the potato mass will increase as the water will move into the potato by osmosis causing it to expand.
In tube B, C the potato will also increase in mass and volume but not as much as in tube A.
In tube D we have a very concentrated solution so water will be drown out of the potato by osmosis causing it to shrink, i.e. decrease in mass and volume.

Conclusion: Tube A= pure water: water moved into the potato cylinder by osmosis . It caused the potato to expand, as a result the mass

This exercise involves estimating the osmotic concentration of potato tuber cells by using a change in mass method. The null hypothesis states that there will be no change of mass of the potato disks after they have been incubated in any sucrose solution. This means that the concentration of sucrose that the potatoes are in will no effect the movement of water in or out of the potato cells. However, the alternative hypothesis states that the mass of the potato disks will increase after they have been incubated in a hypertonic solution. The mass of the potato disks will decrease after they have been incubated in a hypertonic solution. After the results have been gathered, appropriate estimations can then be made as to what the osmotic concentrations of the potato tuber cells are. Osmotic concentrations will either be hypertonic, hypotonic or isotonic depending on the results of mass change of the potato tubers.…

    1. Some potatoes increased in mass while others decreased due to osmosis. Potatoes that had a higher concentration increased in mass because water passed through the membrane into the potato in an effort to dilute it. Potatoes that had a lower concentration than the solution decreased in mass because water flowed through the membrane into the solution trying to dilute the solution. The water moves to the higher concentration to dilute it/maintain homeostasis, increasing or decreasing mass depending on whether it goes in or out.…

When the potato cylinder is placed in a high water potential sucrose solution I think it will increase in mass, and length. This is because the solution has a higher water potential than the cells in the cylinder, water molecules will travel from a high water potential (The solution) to a low water potential (The potato cylinder) through a semi-permeable membrane by osmosis. More molecules will enter the cell then leave it, so the potato cylinder will swell, as the cells become turgid. The contents of the cell in this state of turgidity push against the cell wall, which causes…

We have learned that there is sugar in potato but this sugar is a glucose polymer, starch. Although there is starch in potatoes, there is not sucrose. Sucrose is a bigger molecule than glucose which means that glucose can pass easily through membranes compared to sucrose. The Yukon Gold potato has three grams of sugars in it. The sucrose solution has a less percent of water than the potato does. So because of osmosis the water in the potato will leave to become equilibrium with the sucrose concentration. If the concentration of sucrose is low in the solution, then the potato’s mass will change less because it has more water than sucrose. When the sucrose concentration is higher, the mass will change more because there will be a lot more water…

The aim of this experiment was to show the water potentials of young, old and damaged potatoes and different sucrose concentrations (0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35 and 0.50). It was expected that the potatoes would lose weight as the potatoes would have lower water potential when placed in a solution , and in this can be taken from the theory of osmosis which states that “the passive diffusion of water molecules across a selectively permeable membrane down a concentration gradient” (Taylor and Bruenn, 2009), moving water from a high to a low concentration, so in this case water would move from the potato tuber to the sucrose solution reducing the weight of potatoes. Pospíšilová (1970) also states that the water absorption rate of tissue will decrease if…

It is evident form my graph that as sugar concentration increases the mass of the potatoes when reweighed decreases. This is shown where sugar concentration 0.5M has the lowest value on the graph, therefore highest percentage decrease. When the potato chips are put into distilled water the mass increases, this is shown by the highest value on the graph given by the distilled water solution. In distilled water the potato chips swell up because water enters their cells by osmosis. The distilled water has a high water concentration whereas the potato chips have a low water concentration because there are lots of other solute molecules like sugar due to starch content. This means to eliminate the concentration gradient the distilled water must pass through the semi-permeable membrane into the potato chip. Due to the uptake of water into the potato chips there is an increase in the mass of the potato chips, this can be seen This is what happened when we reweighed the potatoes. This is clearly shown on my graph as the potatoes placed in distilled water gave the highest positive percentage change in mass. When the potatoes are placed in rich sugar solution the potatoes will decrease in mass because water leaves their cells due to osmosis. This is because also happens in sugar solution 0.4M, 0.3M and 0.2M but to a less extent. In the 0.1M solution the potato chip increases in mass. The reason for this is that the concentration of sugar is high and the water in the potato has a low concentration. This means that the sugar solution passes into the potato cells making the potato increases in weight. The conclusion that I have come to is in support of my…

The potato strips put in distilled water became heavier. This was because distilled water was hypotonic to the potato tissue, so that there was a net movement of water into the cell by osmosis. The weight of potato strips put in 10% sucrose solution increased only slightly because 10% sucrose solution was also hypotonic to the potato tissue, however the water potential difference between the sucrose solution and potato tissue was small. The potato strips put in 20% sucrose solution was hypertonic to the potato tissue. Therefore, more water molecules leaving the tissue resulted in a net movement of water out of the cell by osmosis.…
