Ethical Framework In Counselling
In order to discuss the importance of ethical framework, I will firstly look at the current ethical framework that was launched this year and then investigate the ethics around informal consent.
Professor Tim Bond of the British Association Counselling Philosophy who are known as the BACP wrote with the assistance of consultation the 2016 framework. In which Bond highlights that “Our ethics are based on values, principles and personal moral qualities that underpin and inform the interpretation and application of our commitment to clients and good practise.” BACP, (2016: 2). This is known as the ethical framework for counselling professions.

The importance of an ethical framework is so that companies for example follow the right procedures, values and principles. Another importance of ethical framework would be to protect the counsellor and client keeping everyone safe. Ethical framework can also result in good and professional practice meaning that the counsellor is congruent, mind set of beneficence meaning that the counsellor will always make decisions which will benefit the client. It is important that the counsellor creates client autonomy meaning that the client makes decisions for themselves and also that the relationship is a strong and genuine of non-maleficent meaning that there is no harm created towards the client or the counsellor. It helps to give everyone a clear understanding of the helping relationships and the requirements and boundaries that the counsellor and client has.
The responsibility is with the counsellor to ensure that she or he adheres to the ethical framework guidelines, this in turn will allow them to work in a safe environment and ultimately guide counsellors to make well-founded decisions. As not working in an ethical framework can cause harm to the counsellor and their clients just as much as the client not understanding informed consent.
If ethical framework is not followed than it results in risk taking by the counsellor and the client, this could result in not only the client being in harm and in danger but also the counsellor.
