Esophagitis also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD is the inflammation of the esophagus that triggers burning in the chest and may be similar to the pain of heart disease. Esophagitis is frequently caused by the backflow of acid-containing fluid from the stomach to the esophagus (Esophagitis, 2010). This happens after one eats spicy foods, chocolate, tomatoes, oranges, and caffeinated drinks, and alcohol (Silva, 2010).
