Entertainment and News News coverage, whether by television, radio, the internet, or newspaper must be selective, selective not simply in which stories it reports but in how it presents them as well. The media is incapable of providing a rundown of everything that has transpired in a day. Therefore, editors, reporters, etc… decide what will go into the reports. Equally important, reporters are still human beings who, in spite their good intentions, occasionally succumb to anger, jealousy, anxiety, impatience and other emotions that could cloud their objectivity. They belong to large, complex organizations that have their own diverse, often conflicting, goals and needs. So, to report a story “like it is” can become difficult because of individual agendas. Entertainment is to hold the attention of with something amusing or diverting. News is information about recent events. In recent history, news has become a commodity. Therefore, news must sell. News organization use entertainment as a basis for getting the viewer to watch their news program. Manheim claims “that the media is not as diverse as it claims to be. He states, though for competitive purposes they might have us believe otherwise, most American news organizations have a great deal in common with one another…they define news itself in essentially the same terms (Manheim, 1991). Manheim argues that the media entertains the viewer rather than giving them information that is revelant and socially important. In a capitalistic society, news organizations are faced with many types of problems. Money is their number one concern. Television news must compete with each other because of ratings.     Whether it’s the Internet, the worldwide news and celebrity news, bias is everywhere. The media gives out information to make everyone think the same thing and tell the public what they want them to hear. The media allows us to know what they believe is right about topics and situations. They have more information then what they actually give out. They give out what they want us to believe, focusing more on one topic that they favorite and giving us their opinion while other news sources might have a different one.     Contrary to what the journalists of today will affirm, the media are not objective. Journalists allow their liberal viewpoints to infiltrate their reporting and provide the public with tainted information. For example, all the newspaper and television news programs reporting on the war in Iraq focused on American casualties and the fact that “no real evidence of weapons of mass destruction has been found.” In reality, Americans are being killed, but only about 200 have died since the start of the war in April of 2003, which is significantly less than was expected. Also, Americans have found evidence of laboratories which they believe were used for biological and chemical warfare research.     There are various forms of visual entertainment media that has shaped American culture and its values. There are such things as watching violent movies, which can influence us in a negative way. Violence on television has been accepted more nowadays, that some of us overlook it, or become immune to it. This does not mean that violence did not exist in the past, but it does mean that we have come to accept it more now, and are less likely to be surprised by it. There are several “novelas” that have aired on Telemundo or are currently showing on Telemundo that have to do with the cartel. They’re supposed to teach people a lesson, so that they do not follow in these footsteps, but it can backfire and show people techniques. “La Reina del Sur,” or “The Queen of the South,” is supposed to be the girlfriend of a drug trafficker form the Sinaloa cartel. She then becomes a powerful trafficker herself, and it goes from there. Later, they showed another “novela” called “Pablo Escobar: El Patron del Mal,” or “Pablo Escobar, The Boss of Evil.” He becomes a big drug trafficker in Columbia. Currently, Telemundo is showing one called “El Senor del los Cielos,” or “Lord of the Skies.” This one is about a Mexican drug lord who becomes the boss of the Juarez Cartel. The reason all of these examples were listed is because these “novelas” are extremely violent, and yet they become very famous, and people watch as if it were the most normal thing.…
