Eastown Hardware Case
Introduction/ Executive Summary:
As the manager of Eastown Hardware I am faced with the decision of calling Mitch in, a 19 year veteran, to work overtime during Labor Day weekend.
I told Mitch he did not need to come into work during this weekend and he therefore made plans to watch football, go fishing and generally relax this weekend. Nicholas, a three year veteran, is currently grumbling because he feels swamped with all the people coming in.
I decided to go ahead and call Mitch in for work during the Labor Day weekend though he was not schedule to come in to work. He may not be too excited about it, but I came to the realization that, it will be better off if I face the ‘wrath of Mitch,’ than that of our valued customers.

This resulted in an unprecedented number of customers coming in. The store was therefore understaffed and did not have enough sales representatives to attend to their loyal customers. Nicholas cannot take the load; he is not too happy and neither are the customers.
Eastown Hardware will go out of business if this problem is not solved. The store has always been known for its loyalty to customers and knowledgeable staff. This is what has kept it from going out of business like many other independent hardware stores. Customers who walk in and do not experience that sense of belonging will leave to the bigger hardware stores where they are guaranteed at least a customer representative who could help out with general needs.
Mitch will not be too ecstatic about being called to come in to work, after I had told him he did not need to. He is known by most customers though and his presence in the store will most probably reduce the number of frustrated customers since they know him on a personal

Vince needs to set the control tone for the distributorship, meet with his employees to discuss how compliance with the law is essential for being employed at Westchester. Another action Patton needs to take is to hire an outside audit professional/company to execute an investigation to review all employees and how they conduct business on behalf of Westchester to uncover any other possible injustices, and provide a report of recommendations on how to prevent this in the future. This risk assessment should also result in an internal position within Westchester. Recommendations that might come up include: having employees use credit cards instead of cash for better record keeping, requiring actual invoices instead of blank one that are filled in, better safeguarding of inventory, and reconciling inventory counts to accounting records, formal meetings with employees before they sign the annual Code of Conduct, and Patton being more engaged on the warehouse…

One dissatisfied customer from Florida commented that “Gross sales at Home Depot may be soaring, but the customer service is, well, just gross” (p. 20). She elaborated by specifically commenting on the high amount of closed checkout lanes and the attempt to push customers into a self-checkout area. Problems like these are hurting the public perception of the company and should be addressed to avoid a loss in market share. The new CEO must decide how to address the issue and determine which alternative is most suitable for Home Depot. I will discuss two distinct alternatives…

In this case, there are several instances of poor management including but not limited to: lack of proper training, accountability and adherence to manufacturing industry standards, etc. A company as large as Eastern dairy should have a manager on site and more than 4 employees for the night shift, especially given how critical the night shift is in meeting production needs. The so‐called “leader” of the group, Paul is worried about going home early and the cost impact to the company if product needs are not met for one night. Paul’s decision to ignore the issue puts George in an extremely difficult situation. Another problem to note is the management in many corporations today. All too often, employees have self‐serving motives and conflicts of interest that essentially stems from culture of the organization and how it operates. When George initially brings the issue to Paul, we learn quickly from Paul’s demeanor that he had encountered the problem in the past and had seen the maggots several times. Paul is essentially immune to the ‘stomach in knots’ feeling that George experienced as he was headed home. The lack of ethical culture that was instilled by Eastern Dairy’s management is such that the employees just care about clocking in and out and do not take pride in their work. The fact that Paul is in a position to oversee the night shift in and of itself is a significant issue. Furthermore, the company culture did not instill…
