The Importance of Dress Codes Dress codes have been in effect, in all walks of life, for decades upon decades. Dress codes dictate what is, and what is not appropriate to wear in that location. Business attire, school dress codes, and uniforms are all great examples of standards for dressing. The terms that identify what is attire is acceptable changes based on culture, the media, and fashion trends, but have those terms become too blurred? It seems that everyday in the United States people are trying to push the envelope when it comes to fashion and personal style. There are some individuals that believe it is our first amendment right to dress as we choose, to express ourselves through clothing. But these dress codes are put in place for a reason, whether it is to increase safety or uphold a professional image, they are still important. The institution that creates them is responsible for punishing people who choose not to comply with them. Dress codes and other standards for dressing should be respected and followed without exception. In schools across the country, the debate over dress codes is a touchy subject. In the past, schools left no room for argument by requiring all students to wear a pre-approved uniform. Today there is a great deal of controversy regarding what should, and should not be acceptable clothing to wear in school. Some schools have put a zero-tolerance policy into action, punishing all violations (no matter how minimal) of the dress code. These infractions include, but are not limited to, leaving your shirt un-tucked, skirts that are too short, and wearing your pants to low below your waist line. In most situations, the dress code is designed to help increase student and faculty safety. It is a common belief that students who participate in groups, like gangs, use clothes and colors to identify themselves and promote a feeling of unity.
