CUMULATIVE CLASSROOM TEST POLICY
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to give teachers direction as they construct cumulative tests, prepare students to take cumulative tests, and use the results of cumulative tests. The purpose of cumulative tests includes: A. to focus student review efforts on the essential content of the subject area; B. to determine student mastery of the essential content of the subject area; C. to measure individual and group progress toward goals and objectives contained in the course of study; D. to provide teachers with a self-evaluation of the effectiveness of their instruction and an indication of where instructional emphasis should be placed in the future.
Definitions
Cumulative classroom tests are defined as tests developed or selected by the classroom teacher which evaluate student's retention, understanding, or mastery of large amounts of knowledge, of major concepts, and of important skills.
For the purpose of this policy, cumulative classroom tests will not include the district competency tests or tests included under Policy 2623 (group and individual tests of achievement, aptitude, and ability.)
Quarterly review tests are cumulative tests which assess the most important facts, concepts, and skills learned over the majority of a nine (9) week grading period. Quarterly review tests will include, with the exception of the first quarterly test, content selected by the teacher from previous quarterly tests. The fourth quarterly test should include the most important information, concepts, and skills from the entire year.
Guidelines
The following guidelines shall be followed when making decisions relating to cumulative classroom tests. A.
Scope of cumulative classroom tests
As the student matures intellectually, cumulative tests will assess increasingly larger mounts of learning and will span increasingly longer periods of instruction. It is recommended that:
