RESEARCH IN SYSTEM ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

Submitted by: Mark Anthony Matudan Jino Wilberto Lacson Javier Raton Submitted to: Mr. Sonny Maceda

CHAPTER 1

PROJECT CONTEXT
High school is an institution which provides all or part of secondary education. Other terms such as secondary school or “secondary college” are used in different nations or regions. The phrase “high school” often forms part of the name of the secondary institution.
Grading system its contained a information of student and also contained of student grades that will compute true Computer per subject 1st grading up to 4th grading. Grading System is designed to provide incentive reward for achievement and assist in identifying problems of the student. Grading System is the most commonly used in computing and analyzing the performance, talent and skills of students. It is the important record to keep even for the longest time for the referral and credentials of the student to enter their next level of attaining their goals. It is the tract record that recognizes of one student, this maybe use for analyzing of your attitude and values.
Gogon high school envisions who is academically competent value oriented and productive through effective, efficient, committed, and highly motivated teaching force. (Interview Guide for Gogon High School). Gogon high school is a school that teaches and provided good quality education, gogon high school is situated at barangay gogon barriada legazpi city.

Based on our research the school of Gogon High School is using a manual computation of grades of each student, which is the traditional use when technology is not yet developed. Manual computation is very prompt to risk for any circumstances. It is time consuming in terms of recording grades, computation using of calculator. If some records are lost, they never retrieve it in case of unexpected calamity.

Technology it the making, modification, usage and knowledge ot tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems, and methods of organization, in order to solve a problem, improve a preexisting solution to a problem, achieve a goal, handle a n applied input/output relation or perform a specific function. It can also refer to the collection of such tools, including machinery, modifications, arrangements and procedures. Technologies significantly affect human as well as other animal species' ability to control and adapt to their natural environments. The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas: examples include construction technology, medical technology, and information technology.

The human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. The prehistorical discovery of the ability to control fire increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans in travelling in and controlling their environment. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact freely on a global scale. However, not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes; the development of weapons of ever-increasing destructive power has progressed throughout history, from clubs to nuclear weapons. Technology has affected society and its surroundings in a number of ways. In many societies, technology has helped develop more advanced economies (including today's global economy) and has allowed the rise of a leisure class. Many technological processes produce unwanted by-products, known as pollution, and deplete natural resources, to the detriment of the Earth and its environment. Various implementations of technology influence the values of a society and new technology often raises new ethical questions. Examples include the rise of the notion of efficiency in terms of human productivity, a term originally applied only to machines, and the challenge of traditional norms. Philosophical debates have arisen over the present and future use of technology in society, with disagreements over whether technology improves the human condition or or worsen it. Neo-Luddism, anarcho-primitivism, and similar movements criticize the pervasiveness of technology in the modern world, opining that it harms the environment and alienates people; proponents of ideologies such astrans humanism and techno-progressivism view continued technological progress as beneficial to society and the human condition. Indeed, until recently, it was believed that the development of technology was restricted Only to human beings, but recent scientific studies indicate that other primates and certain dolphin communications have developed simple tools and learned to pass their knowledge to other generations.

For me one of good technologies designed by computer programmers is computerized grading system. Grade is the process of applying standardized measurements of varying levels of achievement in a course Grading is one of the most important activities a faculty member does. Many problems in teaching arise because of grading issues. Grading involves how you score quizzes, assignments and exams, what kinds of assignments and exams you give to your students, and how you assign grades in that specific subject at the end of the semester. Grading assignments and exams requires checking for correct answers to specific questions and providing feedback to students about how well they’ve met the learning objectives for those particular class activities, and a grading system reflects your philosophy about your students, about competition, and about the acquisition of knowledge itself.

The commonly problem encountered by the Gogon high school in terms of manual grade computations are data corruption due to virus infection, data lost, time consuming, redundant computation, damaged by natural calamities eg typhoon. (Interview Guide for Gogon High School)

Accuracy and security is not been so defined because of above risks. That’s why Gogon High School is willing to have their own computerized system entitled Gogon High School Grading System which is more accurate, efficient and very easy to use and friendly user. To that, it will lessen their time and effort from traditional manual computation of grades. And eventually they may avoid rushing submission of grades. Gogon High School Grading System will help a lot in the part of teachers, school, administration and as well as the security of data of students. (Interview Guide for Gogon High School)

OBJECTIVE

* To provide grading system that can use by the faculty members and secure the storage and retrieval of grades

PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION

The main purpose of the study is to design a grading system that suits to their daily grading computations and lessen the difficulties from the traditional manual computation of grades and gives comfortability for teachers, principal and other members of school faculty who uses grading system.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE

* To provide grading system that can use by the faculty members * To secure the storage and retrieval of grades * To give comfortability from manual computation of grades * To design friendly user grading system * To improve more productivity of faculty members

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION Our scope of research is to include the complete grading system that can use to store and retrieve grades so that it would improve the productivity of the daily record keepings
Although the research was carefully prepared, I am still aware of its limitations and shortcomings. First of all, the research was conducted in the high school class which has lasted for two days. Two days is not enough for the researchers to observe all of about about student keeping and retrieval of grades It would be better if it was done in a longer time. Second, inability of other teachers that can result of lockness of information gathering will become a threat for the researchers.

Third, since the questionnaire designed to find if there is any problem that they encountered from manual system, we the researchers are just able to design or develop a computerized grading system that can only use in record keeping of grades.

Online technologies are charging the way student lecra in add out of the classroom. Online communication through technology has the potential to change the way in which people learn online learners. The traditional lecture has been criticized to lack sufficient interaction between the professor and the student while not allowing the student the ability to interact w/ the technology.
According to schools, the distance learning system must artificially recreate the teaching-learning interaction and reinles grade it back into the instructional process. This is the basis of the low model.
To ofter to the distance learner on experience as like traditional, face-to-face interaction act classrooms and live, two-way audiovisual interaction. In contrast, the Norwegian model has long traditional of combining mediate distance teaching w/ local face to face teaching.
Will describes the instructional development process for distance education consistency of the customary stages of design development evaluation and revision. In designing effective distance instruction, one must consider the goals, needs and of teachers and student , but also content requirement and technical constraints. If unusual delivery system on required they must be made accessible for all the participants[Willis,1992] 2 hallway et al. stated that education changes the learning relationship from the common centralized school model to a more decentralized, flexible model. It also reverses social dynamics by bringing school to students rather the student to school.
Adult learner has a wide variety of reason for pursuing learning at a distance, constraints of time , distance finances the opportunity to take courses or hear outside speaker who would otherwise be unavailable, and the ability to come in contact w/ other student from different social, cultural , economic and experiential backgrounds. As a result, they gain not only new knowledge but also new skills, including the ability to communicate and collaborate w/ widely dispersed colleges and peers whom they may never see [Willis, 1993]3.
The presented literatures are related to our study because some of the said literature talks about how the student react on e-learning and responds on focused on e-learning for the student benefits.

This study aim to improve the manual operation to computerized system and to minimize the use of time and effort.
Donald L. Almoroso (2005)10 conducted a study entitled “Use of online assessment tools to enhance student performance in large class” addresses the use of online assessment tools for large classes. Research has reported on increasing use of technologies for enhance the learning in the large classes. Hybrid classes are those that both the traditional lectures and examinations in conjuration w/ online teaching, learning modules, online assessment tools.
The said studies were closely related to our study because our study focuses on the online development of the student performances in school. The said studies also performs task like viewing of find grades to the students where our study also attained the system can gathered new data and calculate it to create find grades.

Lumber (2002) stated in her study entitled “ a systematic enrollment process using database system in Saint John Academy. Calamba, Laguna” that the application of database system to the enrollment process will greatly increase its efficiency; automation of enrollment process will upgrade the quality of the services provided for the qualified enrollees.
Earlier, Encila (1999) Introduced the Enrollment System for the Computer Science Department of LCBA and traders, designed of enrollment System is advantageous to the school because it speed up the process and with only a minimum amount of power and resources
Kampitan (2000) developed an Enrollment System of Liceo De Victoria that is designed to keep the students record. This is used to provide an effective aster of providing information of the student and also the accounting purposes “ Liceo De Victoria Enrollment was developed and implement using relational database and designed in clipper 5.3.
Revalla (2005) created an Automation Enrollment System for the Computer Science Department of the Laguna Collge business and arts. The study was conceived because of the need to update the current registration system of LCBA, which is done manually. Her study, was based on the special problem of Mr. Bonifacio E. Conde (2007) in his study entitled “ Network-bases Enrollment System of Paete National High School cited that the manual process of enrollment and manual handling of information and reports of the students is very laborious one. The proponents developed a network based enrollment system to the said school to solve the huge amount of task.

Foreign Literature
University of Finland SMS-Based Information System

The Short Message Service (SMS) allows text-based messages to be sent to and from mobile telephones on a GSM network. Each message has a maximum length of 160 characters. The possibility of using SMS in Africa is growing rapidly high. It is mostly used for things such as medicine awareness and warning notifications. In Mozambique health workers can support diagnosis & treatment through Bulk SMS and even in Uganda, Malawi and Benin health education messages are sent by text messages. SMS based transactional alerts are SMS’s sent each time a change occurs in a bank account, for example, or when your credit card is used then you will get an SMS on your mobile phone. Marketing on a mobile phone has become increasingly popular ever since the rise of SMS in the early 2000s in Europe and some parts of Asia when businesses started to collect mobile phone numbers and send off wanted (or unwanted) content.

Ace Adrian Sandoval in Enrollment System
Enrollment System is useful especially when the school retrieves the important information from the student. The school can trace what is the standing of the students. Lack of Enrollment System in a school can lead to chaos and troubles. Students will be confused on what they should do to be able to enroll. It is extremely useful in the school in the way of working processes of enrolling become much easy.
Jenny Anto in Descriptive Method of Study
The main goal of this type of research is to describe the data and characteristics about what is being studied. The idea behind this type of research is to study frequencies, averages, other statistical calculations. Although this research is highly accurate, it does not gather the causes behind a situation. Descriptive research is mainly done when A researcher wants to gain a better understanding of a topic. For example, a frozen ready meals company learns that there is a growing demand for fresh ready meals but doesn’t know much about the area of fresh food and so has to carry out research in order to gain a better understanding. It is quantitative and uses surveys and panels and also the use of probability sampling. Descriptive Research s also called Statistical Research.

Maranatha Preparatory Enrollment System

With its 1,000 students, Maranatha Preparatory ranks among the biggest school in the country in terms of population in many branches. And with a large population comes multiple problems in enrollment student records and related data. Wanting a lasting solution to the problem, Maranatha asked consultants for recommendations. The result was decision to automate Maranatha’s enrollment system. Maranatha decided to automate the enrollment system in two phases: the development of a system for enrollment and student records for Phase I, and the integration of the student's financial records for. They reviewed organizational structures, assigned people to support groups and asked faculty advisers and staff to train. She also met with the representatives of individual institutes and with the support of the academic manager sands*Wizard's technical group, plotted the move to launch an integrated system. The preparation involved cleaning the database, standardizing labels for subject and preparing the subject requirement

Berkely Unified School District Enrollment System

Southern California community Berkely Unified School District has gone live with anew Cognos-Based enrollment system that was designed by lrvine, CA-Based professional services firm2e Analytix. Prior to installing the new system, Berkely Unified School District, Which has two main campuses and multiple satellites that support nine schools and 2 departments, handled its enrollment via manual spreadsheets with no reporting, continuity or standard practices and error corrections the schools enrollment management budgeting and planning took up to three months to compile, consolidate and implement Berkely Unified School District tapped e2e Analytix

Synthesis of the state of the art
The proposed system can help the students to get the information from the actual source at their own convenient time through their cell phones. To develop this system, the university must have: (1) Data Source, such as grade release, enrollment information, university announcement, and internship opportunity - valuable information that students need to access anytime. The databases can be in different places and connected to each other by the SMS server.(2) SMS Server with mobile phone or GSM/GPRS modem and SIM card included. The SMS server must have a software application to manage the SMS requests and query to the database.
The above mentioned details concerning the proposed grading system is especially beautiful in students but if they used the newer programming language it would be faster and more productive. Because modern technology makes the most use of the software developers today

Computer world is now at our hands, this give improvement and development of all programs in the different agencies, in offices and in schools. Paper work become easy, computation is faster, record keeping and bringing out is fast. In schools, all works became easily fast to look at record, easily to reproduce student record. Since, computation of grades is one burden of the teachers, computerization made the answer in solving, in recording and computing students performances and achievement. The same is through in keeping records and forms incorporated in their work aside from guidance and advice. Computation of grades in school became easy for modern teacher but for tradition alone they found difficult but now no burden in recording, transmitting, giving the equivalent and the final grades for teachers who are computer literate, where time, effort and energy is minimized. This is the point of this study, to device a program in order to ease the computation of grades and ranking the students basing their subject’s performances. This is now the scenario and dilemma of Buenavista National High School. Now, with the technology which is to be developed, it will enable them to do more with less effort. The program will not continuously find way to improve and expedite the calculation of grades. The use of computer nowadays is necessary to replace the manual system that affects efficiency and effectiveness, accuracy and reliability…

Researches in learning assessment, especially in terms of academic performance, have long criticized traditional rating schemes that provide feedback to students. Because learning is multi-faceted, most critiques of such formats tend to see these as superficial and inadequate arguing that they tend to cover only the areas in learning that are widely rated, leaving other areas in learning under-assessed. As a result, different systems were proposed and varying rating structures were employed by different schools in the country such as point system averaging and weighted averaging. This school year, the Department of Education (DepEd) will be using a new grading system in public…
