Classroom Scenario Analysis

Classroom Scenario Analysis
Mrs. Ross has her fourth grade students move their desks together into groups of 2 to do a group activity. She instructs them to pair with anyone they choose. Teresa raises her hand, “I don’t want to pair with Megan again because she doesn’t do any of the work. Can I have someone else?” Megan who is soft-spoken just looks down at the floor as the class waits for the teacher’s response. Mrs. Ross asks Teresa and Megan to come with her outside and instructs the class to carry on with the activity. 1. What level of mutual respect exists between students and the teacher in this scenario? How did mutual respect affect the classroom dynamics? How would you improve mutual respect in this classroom?
A high level a mutual respect exists between students and the teacher in this scenario. Mrs. Ross had to trust the students at least a little bit in order for her to believe they could handle moving their desks around to do group work. Teresa showed respect for Mrs. Ross by raising her hand to properly voice her concern about her partner. Not only did she raise her hand, but she respected and trusted the teacher enough to feel safe expressing her feelings. Although soft-spoken, Megan could have found some way to negatively reply to what Teresa said. However, I believe she respected Mrs. Ross enough to know she could trust her to act in a fair and kind manner, so Megan waited quietly for her response. Mrs. Ross showed respect for the two girls when she asked them to come with her outside. She didn’t just ignore the issue or thoughtlessly assign another partner for Teresa. Mrs. Ross took the time to acknowledge their thoughts and feelings in private where she could assess the situation better without putting either of the girls on the spot. Finally, Mrs. Ross showed respect for the class when she trusted them to carry on with the activity while she stepped out of the class with Megan and Teresa.

The first hour and a half I spent observing Mrs. Ballardo kindergarten classroom. The type of lesson that I am observing is Math Cooperative groups and the objective that is being worked on in this lesson is that the students can show that they know the numbers by counting dots on a die. When walking into the classroom I immediately felt like this was a class that promoted learning. It felt so welcoming, and the mood of the children were great they were all sitting on the rug and ready to learn. The classroom is arranged with the five tables. When you first walk into the classroom there are two…

The ultimate goal of Instructional Design is to quickly and effectively teach people a new skill, or system of thinking. Elliot Masie, editor of TechLearn Trends, suggests ¡§all training is about behavioral stimulation that changes human beings on some level.¡¨ (Masie, 1998, p. 14) This is a tall order ¡§to change human beings¡¨, and therefore, any professional instructor that accepts this challenge must ask plenty of fundamental questions first. These essential questions are part of a process known as Needs Assessment. This critical front-end work is going to 1. Provide information about audience capabilities and preparedness.…

This approach emphasizes academic, social, and emotional growth in a strong school community. The main practices of this approach are morning meeting, establishing rules, energizers, quiet time, and closing circle. Even though Science class was taught in the first period, their day officially started with the morning meeting. The children gathered in the large group area, greeted each other, had a small activity, and got the morning message from Ms. B. She also gave them the schedule of the day, and the rotation stations they were going to be working on that morning. The children are separated into four groups; blue, green, red, and orange. The students that needed extra help are part of the last two groups and are assisted by the general education teacher, special education teacher, or the teaching assistant in most rotations. The morning rotations were focused on reading and writing. There were five children in the red group, three of them had IEPs, and two were ELL students. Miguel is one of these students, he understands a little bit of Spanish, mainly speaks one of the Native Mayan Languages, and has been attending this school since February. Allan is the other ELL student in this group, he only speaks Spanish and has been attending this school since January. Ms. P had shared that the children who had IEPs in that class, either had a learning disability, or speech language impairment. This group began rotations with…

    Classroom Culture

I went to a Catholic school when I was in high school in the Philippines. The maximum students in the classroom is up to 50 people. It has to be very quiet or else the teacher will assign a certain student to make a list of those who are noisy. The teacher mostly speaks in the classroom and students must wait for the teacher to signal if there are some questions. Students can not speak at each other while the class is still going because most instructors do not want to be interrupted. Also, stundents can asks questions but they just have to wait for the teacher to call their name and entertain them. If a student want to ask the teacher a question, they have to raise right hand and never say anything until the name is called. It is okay to help another student during a class and not during the test because of students talk to each other during a test, it is considered cheating automatically. The teacher wears a modest uniform from Mondays through Fridays. Also, students wears uniform all school days and it has to be modest as well. Students mostly arrive on time, if a student comes late, they must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian before the guard will let them in and talk to the dean to explain the reason of tardiness. Coming to school with three lates even if it's not consecutive, they will be punished to clean the school ground or the restrooms for the whole day. When the teacher enters the room, all students stands up and greets the teacher all together. Students have assigned seats but it depends on the teacher sometimes. During the Spanish coloniazation, the males are separated from the females. They can't be in the same classroom due to a very conservative culture, but nowadays both sexes are in the same classroom. We call the teacher by their marital status or "Ma'am and Sir" then followed by their lastname. Tests are given during the entire year, every three and a half months. The type of grading system in the Philippines depends with the school. But…

After watching "A Class Divided", a teacher used an experiment on her class, a brown eyed/blue eyed experiment. The experiment was to help the children understand about prejudice and discrimination. In the experiment Mrs Elliot told her class that blue eyed children were better than the brown-eyed children. The brown-eyed children had to wear collars so that they could tell each group apart from a distance. Mrs Elliot told the blue eyed children that they were smarter, nicer etc. than the other group, they also had special privileges, five minutes more recess time, drinking from the water fountain while the brown-eyed group had to carry on working and use paper cups, the blue eyed children were not allowed to play with the brown eyed children. Before the experiment started all of the children were friends and cooperated with one another and got along well, but during the experiment they started to turn on one another. The children from both groups started to show discrimination to the others straight away, during recess one child from the blue group started to call a child from the brown group names resulting in a fight even though they were friends before the experiment. The brown-eyed children lost interest in learning, playing and in their own abilities, they were demoralised, felt sad and worthless and withdrew socially from the blue group with the lower achieving children taking it harder. The reason the class started to act this way is because they actually believed that their group was better than the other, and the group that wasn't started to feel that they weren't being treated fairly. The children showed hatred towards the opposing group, even showing hatred towards their teacher because of what she made the other group believe and how they reacted. Mrs Elliot later changed things around when she told the brown-eyed group that they were now better than the blueeyed group, resulting in a reversal of yesterday’s…
