CIVIL ENGINEERING Civil engineering is the oldest of the main branches of engineering. Civil engineers use their knowledge to supervise and plan construction projects such as roads, airports, bridges, canals, tunnels, and wastewater systems. They also collaborate with architects to design and construct various types of buildings. Some other civil engineering endeavors include highways, airports, pipelines, railroads, levees, and irrigation and sewage systems. Civil engineers try to design their structures to be functional, efficient and durable. Most of the projects civil engineers are involved with have an impact on the environment. They use their knowledge of the environment to create structures that are not harmful. These structures must also meet building codes and other regulations. Civil engineers are usually contracted for their work and must have their designs approved by city and state officials. They will create a proposal for the job that includes estimation of costs, illustrations of designs, and specifications of the building. To enter the field of civil engineering one must first earn a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. To obtain a position as a researcher or as a faculty member, one must earn a graduate degree. Many companies recruit engineers right out of college and post ads in magazines, journals, and newspapers as well as on the internet. As civil engineers gain experience they are more likely to be offered opportunities for advancement in the field. They could be promoted to positions such as department heads and senior or project managers. Advanced degrees as well as registration as a professional engineer also bolster ones chances of advancement. The current employment outlook for civil engineers in Wisconsin is favorable. Those seeking jobs in the field will find very good employment opportunities. This holds true throughout the nation and is also the long-term employment outlook. The

On October 7th, the lecture was on Civil Engineering. The Presentation lecture was by Ned J. Araujo. Mr. Araujo introduced himself as a ‘Civilized Engineer’ with a PE titled. The PE title is known as a Professional Engineer as a requirement to receive the title of PE, one has to complete a four year degree at an accredited university and also work under a PE for two years; with also taking the FE (fundamentals of Engineering) exam and the PE after thereafter. Mr. Araujo started off the lecture by giving us, his educational background, originally from Brazil. Mr. Araujo began like most of us at Community College, he attended Cerritos College. Soon after he mentioned he struggled to come up with a way to pay for university, so he joined the US Navy Construction Battalion as a reservist.…

Civil Engineers have to know how to design and assemble shapes to construct buildings, dams, bridges, tunnels, highway systems. Civil Engineer must understand and know how to compute such quantities as lengths, areas, volumes, centroids, moments of inertia, and curvatures of a building. Civil Engineers also help build my most favorite place in the world, they help with the designing of soccer fields. The whole field is 120 by 75 yards, the midfield has to be right in the middle of the field, they also have to measure the size of the keeper box which is 6 yards by 20 yards and the penalty box is 18 yards by 40 yards, they also have to help construct the goals that is the length of 8 yards, and last the corners of the field have to be exactly 90 degrees with a quarter circle on the inside of the field so we know where to take the corner kick…

I had the pleasure of interviewing Bob Appleton, a civil engineer at Texas A&M. The questions I asked him that taught me the most about civil engineering were “What is your daily job as a civil engineer?” and “What are the personal qualities you need to be a civil engineer? For example, motivation, etc.” Mr. Appleton said as a civil engineer, your daily job is to take data that surveyors collected in the field, either on the the ground or by aerial photographs (which he explained as being similar to images seen on Google Earth). Then you use the data to create drawings and designs for many different structures such as buildings, roads, bridges, ports, etc. Mr. Appleton said that to be a civil engineer you need to possess the qualities of integrity…

As the name describes, there are three primary phases: design, bid, and build. It also has three primary contractual parties: the owner, the architect, and the contractor. Through this method of delivery, two separate contracts exist, owner to designer/architect and owner to contractor. There is not a formal contract between the contractor and the architect but there is a need for collaboration between the two. The owner and the architect execute a contract for design, the production of construction documents, and administration of the construction process at the beginning of the project. The owner is responsible for communicating to the contractor the plans and specs. The contractor is then responsible for building the project as was designed. It is also important to note that the owner is responsible for any differences between the plans and specs and must understand what is required for performance. This method is considered universal, easy to understand, and has clearly defined roles for the parties involved. One downfall to the design-bid-build process is it may have a longer duration compared to other delivery methods, for all the design work must be completed before soliciting the construction bids. In the design-bid-build delivery system it is common for the general contractor to not perform all the work with their own…

It all starts with a client’s commission or contract. The commission may include the design of a building, or a group of several buildings. Architects make presentations to clients about their ideas. These ideas turn into many drawings and sketches—by hand or even on the computer. Sometimes, these designs include the materials to be used, as well as required mechanical, electrical and structural specifications. After the design is approved, architects usually help coordinate the people involved in the construction of the building. Architects work closely with their clients every step of the way so they can make sure that the building meets their needs, budget and it is finished as scheduled. Because there are no guarantees that everything will go smoothly, sometimes, architects may need to provide creative solutions for problems that occur.…

Civil Engineers build significant structures that can last more than a century, some of these structures such as Burj Khalifa, pyramids and evil towers in France can be considered as landmarks, because of its history and its beauty of design. Civil Engineers study the four factors of building structures to determine which tools and materials they will use in order to build permanent structures. Although engineers studying the factors and take the determination, there is some disasters occurred in many places because of many reasons. Nick Spurrier said “There will always be failures or disasters as engineers and designers push the boundaries by building taller buildings, longer bridges, or by reaching further into space”. In this outline I will show some of engineering disasters that happened before and what are the reasons.…

In my quest for deciding what course to pursue, I also did a 6-week internship with Larsen & Toubro limited, at their under-construction ICICI Bank building (Composite Structure). Here, I was thoroughly exposed and actively involved in the various stages of construction, i.e. Planning, Field Execution, Safety Measures and Quality Control. This gave me a very good and generic idea on Civil Engineering projects, right from when it is conceived to the finishing stages.…

Many people in my life have also suggested that I pursue engineering with my good math and science skills. Pursuing engineering was without a doubt the easiest and hardest decision I have ever made. This will be my third year at Missouri University of Science and Technology and I can still safely say this is the right fit for my personal needs for self-growth. I am always challenged and required to think in a vastly different way than I have ever been used to. My intended major now was mechanical engineering which is still very interesting to me, but I discovered the many intricacies of civil engineering and decided that I need to pursue it with much haste and tenacity. Civil engineers are a vital part to society as they design so many various structures like roads building plans and even recreational areas. Now, the only way to become an official civil engineer is through formal education. Through this university, my future will be vastly changed for the better by adding significant value to it. The challenges I face every day at Missouri S&T will most certainly be worth it in the end, for I know what I want and need in my life when I become a civil…

Before beginning construction civil engineers plan layout and every other aspect of a building. As the article “Architecture (building)” on Microsoft® Encarta® remarks “Architecture must satisfy its intended uses, must be technically sound, and must convey aesthetic meaning” because “Architecture is a social art” (page 1 of 19). Structural engineers are principally concerned with the structural form of a building, whereas architects are concerned with the integration of the building functions, form, mechanical system, as well as the building itself. It is through their collaboration that complex building can be designed. Designing the overall frame of a building is the first step in constructing a viable and stable structure. According with the Attila Lawrence’s article on the “architectureweeek” web page, “ In today’s competitive business environment, corporate cultures tend to focus on improving product quality while minimizing costs and managing risks”, (page 1 of 2). Furthermore, the English poet Sir Henry Wotton said: “ Well building have three conditions: Commoditie, Firmenes, and Delight” (qtd. In Architecture (building) page 1 of 19). Structure and aesthetics of a building are related through efficiency, lightness, elegance, and the principles of minimizing weight and using the least material possible to control cost. Civil engineers and architects together design in detail the various components of a…
