CHILD OBSERVING: Mina Hanoun
AGE: 3 1/2 YEARS OLD

The child that I am observing today is my cousin Mina Hanoun. She’s about 3 feet tall and around 30 pounds. The observations took place in her playroom. After the thirty minutes of observation were completed, I was amazed by how active and responsive she was to her surroundings, considering she was only two. I watched her play the role of "mommy". She was pretending to care for her doll as a mother would for her baby. She would gently hold the doll in her hand and feed her a bottle. I found her actions were modeling secondary circular reactions. I then observed her fine motor skills through her carefully holding a full glass of milk. She was trying to carefully drink the milk without spilling any of it. Her gross motor skills were evident when she would jump high on the trampoline that she had in her back yard. Mina’s cognitive traits were clearly evident when she would sing along to the tunes of the TV shows that she would watch. For example, she would sing the “I love you” song from Barney and friends. Her personality seemed to be very strong when it came to following orders. When Mina was asked to sit down and have lunch she put up a fuss, not wanting to listen. She also has a happy carefree personality, exploring and enjoying all her surroundings. Taking an interest in all she can from songs to toys, to dance moves. Chloe’s relationship with me being a familiar face was smooth, as I would play with her and her favorite dolls. I believe all her personality traits I encountered on this day were that of a mentally happy and healthy toddler. All her actions point out to a happy 3 ½ year old exploring and enjoying all that her eyes can see.

I observed a child throwing a fit at the mall the other day. This child did not want to leave the store and did not want to get into her stroller. She started to throw her head back and scream very loudly. Then she would throw her arms around and kick, in an attempt to not be strapped in. The mother started to yell at her daughter to stop while trying to strap her in. After a few minutes of the child kicking and screaming she was able to strap her in. But the child continued to scream, this was when the mother decided to leave the mall. My recommendation is that instead of trying to force the child into the stroller the parent could have held the child. Trying her best to calm her down, since the child was throwing around her body while the…

Observing this toddler has taught me many things. I was able to learn about the different forms of child development and what it looks like. One of the major forms of child development is physical. The child experiences major child development during the first two years of life. During this time the child experiences gross-motor development. The skills obtained from these developments are the ability to run, jump, catch etc. During the observation of the infant I was able to witness some of these developments. For example over the course of my observation I noticed the infant had significantly improved his ability to stand up and sit down on his own. He was struggling when the observation but seemingly got more comfortable doing it over and over again. The walking stared to become natural and more second nature however it was awkward and difficult when the infant just started. The infant also became more comfortable gripping and grasping objects. Another form of development observed was cognitive development. This development includes the ability to think rhetorically and the ability to communicate with others. The child made significant development in this field he was able to learn more words and express his thoughts in an understanding manner. The infant’s ability to play and interact with other children has increased. His memory has increased and is able to remember certain things over time his able to memorize more things and can recognize familiar faces. The final form of physical development is social-emotional development. This stage involves dealing with other children and being able to pay attention to adult figures. The infant is able to obey the adults and other persons in charge. They also become more comfortable at expressing their emotions. The child is also able to learn empathy and…

In an evening spent at a local park, I observed two toddlers playing on the playground. Both toddlers were about the same size and height, and they were seemingly about two years of age. These two children stood out to me because though they seemed about the same age, their behavior on the playground was very different. As I observed, both subtle and large differences began to make themselves apparent.…

My Virtual child, Anabia, was born naturally. I decided to breastfeed her because that would help me to have a secure attachment with her. However, we also decided to supplement her with formula. To make her interested in her surroundings, I talked to her, hold her, and interact with her whenever she seemed interested. By the age of 3 months, she was showing more intense interest in her surroundings. She was generally calm and easy to soothe a child. If she woke up crying at night, me or my partner respond to her persisted crying. Since Anabia was a curious baby, we took her outside more to relatives and friends’ house so that she gets along well with new people. I noticed that she was learning a thing or two, I started to show her interesting objects such as rattle, mobiles and stuffed toys to understand which one she is interested in and reaching out for…

A regular day in the Pre-K classroom begins with the children having free play, in any area of the class. This morning, some children played in the kitchen area, where four boys dressed up as construction workers or fighter fighters, while pretending to have breakfast. Others played in the block area with dinosaur figures, while others were either doing art on the tables, or were playing with magnetic blocks in the circle time area. Today, the children seem rowdy, as they ran and screamed across the class. Mrs. M would get their attention and say, “Use your inside voices, please” or “I need you to calm your body”. During check in, children get dropped off at random times, some children seem excited while others seem upset. There was one occasion,…
