CDA Portfolio standard goal 1
Competency Goal 1
To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment
Functional Area 1: Safe
My goal in this functional area is to keep children safe at all times by supervising them constantly and establishing class rules that will help children stay safe. The class rules related to this functional area will be walk in the classroom, keep your hands to yourself, and stay in the classroom at all times. I will teach children why these class rules are so important as well. In addition to these rules I will teach my students basic safety measures like stranger danger, only cross the road with an adult, and only leave the classroom with an adult. I will also inspect my student’s outdoor and indoor environments before the children come in, in the morning and throughout the day as the children participate in activities. It is important to inspect these places because children can be injured by broken toys and playground equipment. It is also important to teach children these basic safety measures because children don’t always understand how dangerous some of the things they do are.
Functional Area 2: Healthy
My goal in this functional area is to help my students stay healthy as possible by doing my best to limit the number of germs my students come into contact with during the day as well as teaching children healthy habits. Ensuring a child’s health is important because children who are not healthy do not to benefit from the childcare program they are in or the learning opportunities they are presented with. So in order to ensure children's health I plan on teaching children when to wash their hands, the correct way of washing their hands and why it is so important. I plan on making sure my students wash their hands after using the restroom and sneezing or coughing into their hands. I also plan on complying with my daycares exclusion policy and excluding any sick children from class to keep them from spreading germs to other students. I plan on

In order to establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I first begin with providing a clean and organized classroom. All toys and equipment are sanitized on a daily basis, all outlets are covered and all fixtures are mounted to the walls to prevent from tipping over. Upon entering the classroom every parent is required to sign a daily health check in which the teacher and the parent both assess the health of each child. Healthy meals and snacks are provided to each and every child, keeping in mind, the allergies that each child has. Medicines are also carried for each student that requires it on a daily basis. The classroom tables are wiped down and sanitized and the floor is swept after each meal. The children also brush their teeth after meals to help the children gain healthy brushing habits. The teacher child ratio is maintained at all times.…

Another way in which I promote safety is by checking the environments (Inside, Outside, and other sites on and off the installation) before the youth arrive to make sure that precautions are in place. By doing this I am better able to control my surroundings if something goes wrong. Precautions such as safety plugs, cabinets and closets are locked, and that there are no broken toys or dangerous objects in the youth space. To be sure I have checked the room completely a daily safety checklist is used for each classroom. Items that are unsafe are removed from the class room, or repaired.…
