Cda Competency Goal 1
CDA COMPETENCY STANDARD -1
Functional Area 1- SAFETY
Children do not understand what is safe and what is not and therefore adults have the responsibility to teach, reinforce and protect children from risks.
I look around the classroom for potential safety risks and hazards, ensuring that cupboards have child-safe locks put in place at all times; detergents and chemical cleaners are out of children’s reach by storing them on top of cabinets or locked away. Toys are regularly checked for broken, unsafe parts.
I make sure electrical outlets are covered, wires and cords are not accessible to children.
I apply my training of Emergency Evacuation Procedures and we practice same, in monthly fire drills.
Exits are marked visibly, First-Aid bags are always replenished and Epi-pens too, are easily accessible at all times and taken with me when we leave the classroom.
Children who wear hooded jackets are closely monitored by me on the equipment and made sure that the cords or loose clothing do not pose a risk of strangulation.
I do a head count before and after transitions during the day to make sure that all the children are accounted for. I also mark attendance as the children are dropped off, so that from the onset, I know who is in class that day and who is absent. I also encourage children to walk in a single line. There’s always one teacher in the front and another, at the back of the line.

Functional Area 2- HEALTHY
My goal being to encourage healthy habits, I remind the children to practice hand washing for 20 seconds with soap and water throughout the day and after toileting, to sneeze or cough in to their elbow and to use a tissue to clean the nose.
I am trained in First Aid, MAT & CPR and use that training to take better care of a child who is unwell, isolating the child when necessary. I adhere to the preschool’s procedures and take particular care to ensure that exposure to the sickness is minimized or eliminated. I wear new gloves

One of my goals is to promote healthy habits. To establish and maintain a healthy environment is to prevent the spread of germs and promote healthy eating habits. Germs can be easily spread among the age group of children in my care, because they are in close contact with each other. One of the ways I promote a healthy environment is hand washing. I wash my hands and wear gloves before and after handling food, helping with toileting, changing diapers and cleaning noses. I have the children wash their hands during similar times and ensure that they do it properly. Cleaning and sanitizing play areas daily and mouthed toys are immediately removed from the play area and sanitized at the end of the day. I teach the children about healthy eating on a daily basis. At lunch and snack time we talk about the healthy foods and not so healthy foods that they are eating and what food is best for their growing bodies. I have two weeks of lesson…

Health and safety is monitored and maintained by carrying out risk assessments and daily checks. When ensure that this is done by carrying out risk assessments and daily checks on a regular basis and if any health and safety issues arise with the equipment or environment we will attend to these issues and recorded the information and remove any fault from the area and ensure that other members of staff are aware of these issues. Plug socket covers, safety gates and door stoppers are monitored and maintained by checking that plug socket covers are in all sockets and check that none are broken, if any plug socket covers are found broken they should be removed and replaced with new. When children arrive at the setting safety gates must be in place before children attended so that no children can leave the setting. Door stoppers must be put in place to ensure that children don’t trap their fingers in the door when going out and all members of staff must put these in place and if any fall of the door members of staff should replace them immediately. Personal protective equipment must be available at all times and all staff should use this when changing nappies, cleaning up sick and if a child is bleeding. When wearing personal protective equipment we stop the spread of germs and cross contamination to anyone else. If any member of staff notices that personal protective equipment is getting low on stock that member of staff should inform the manager so more personal protective equipment can be ordered. DBS checks should be carried out before anyone is to start working in the setting because safeguarding is a major issue when working with children and is the duty of the setting manager to ensure that all members of staff hold a…

Part of my work is to ensure that the children in my care are allowed to develop these skills in a safe environment. At Westview I carry out day-to-day risk assessments for activities and excursions that each child participates in. These risk assessments look at both the spreading of infection amongst children and potential accidents, enabling children to develop more robust immune systems. As part of this I also ensure the children wash their hands after going to the toilet and eating as well as covering their mouths when sneezing and coughing.…

In order to establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I first begin with providing a clean and organized classroom. All toys and equipment are sanitized on a daily basis, all outlets are covered and all fixtures are mounted to the walls to prevent from tipping over. Upon entering the classroom every parent is required to sign a daily health check in which the teacher and the parent both assess the health of each child. Healthy meals and snacks are provided to each and every child, keeping in mind, the allergies that each child has. Medicines are also carried for each student that requires it on a daily basis. The classroom tables are wiped down and sanitized and the floor is swept after each meal. The children also brush their teeth after meals to help the children gain healthy brushing habits. The teacher child ratio is maintained at all times.…

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I model safety practices and healthy routines in an environment that supports development and growth in these areas. My goal is to provide a clean healthy environment that meets each child’s physical needs. Making sure the classroom and playground are clean and safe at all times reduces the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times. Making sure all outlets are covered so children can’t access them. I make sure inside as well as outside there is nothing children can harm themselves on such as sharp objects or small items they can choke on. I ensure that all chemicals and cleaning supplies are put away out of the reach of children or stored in locked cabinets. Some risks obviously need to be avoided and we wouldn’t be competent in our role of caring for children and young people if we didn’t protect them from these dangers. Faulty electrical equipment and poisonous chemicals are two examples of what can be clearly dangerous. On the other hand situations such as, climbing stairs, visiting the park, using a hammer or lightning a candle are experiences where is important to access the real level of risk. These experiences can extend the children’s learning and understanding on how to manage the real world in which they live.…

How I ensure that families are kept aware of what’s happening in their child’s daily/ or weekly life in my program is by having room displays such as photos and posters of the children interacting with each other and bulletin boards of their artwork all around my center. I would also post pictures of the children dancing and laughing around my class to show the parents the fun things we do. I would also post pictures of them working to show the children’s parents that my children are getting educated and that my children are learning. I am also able to provide the families with my weekly agenda of what the children and I will be working on. I can also exchange emails with the families to communicate via email, if they have any questions we can also exchange numbers. I can also provide daily reports of the child’s daily progress. I can also include and struggle the child has had during the day.…
