Case Study 2: Wireless and Mobile Technologies

Wireless and Mobile Technology Wireless technologies facilitate the transfer of information between two or more points. Through wireless technology, we are able to manage productivity, enable security systems, and increase consumer convenience. According to Techtarget.com, wireless technology is rapidly evolving and is playing an increasing role in the lives of people throughout the world. In addition, ever-larger numbers of people are relying on the technology directly or indirectly. Some more specialized examples of wireless communications and control include Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS), Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), and I-Mode. There are several different types of wireless technology. These included: fixed wireless, mobile wireless, portable wireless, and IR wireless. Fixed wireless is the use of wireless devices connected to the internet by specialized modems. Mobile wireless is the use of wireless devices such as the cell phone. Portable wireless devices are considered to be battery powered wireless devices that are used outside of the home or office such as handheld cell phones or personal computers. Lastly, there is the IR wireless technology option. IR wireless technology is commonly used in home entertainment units, headsets, and cordless microphones. This type of technology is the use of wireless technology in devices or systems that send data through infrared radiation. According to gomobilemichigan.org, mobile technology is technology that is portable; it refers to any device that you can carry with you to perform a wide variety of “tasks”. The website also states it is technology that allows those tasks to be performed via cellular phone, PDA, vehicles, laptops, etc. A standard mobile device has gone from being no more than a simple two-way
