Buttercup Monologue
“Buttercup, you can do it!” That was my nickname, given by Shawn. As corny as it was, anytime he called me Buttercup I pushed myself. The rain, the heat, the bugs. I was so out of my comfort zone. I was on this journey with 11 crew members and 3 instructors. For the next 14 days, I was a nomad. Finding a new home every day. I was given a journal and documented how every day went. Everybody met at the Asheville National Airport. I would be coming from BWI. Reaching Asheville, I soon had a change of heart. I introduced myself to the girls. We started our journey once we reached Pisgah National Forest. I have had walks in parks before, but those views were amazing. The van passed by waterfalls and many creeks. Everybody received a pack, which …show more content…
We hiked for 8 hours. Our destination was going to be Grogan’s Creek. We bush-pushed, walking uphill and crushing any bushes in our way. I was so scared, I thought I was going to fall backwards on the hill. I even spotted a snake. My boots were very wet. The soles felt mushy with all the water in them. By then my hair was puffy and nail polished chipped. I was so conscious and we had no mirrors to look. Around this time, I was given the nickname Buttercup. That night we had an encounter with a bear. Shockingly, it ran off. Day 6 through 8, we stayed at the Halloween Slab. We would be rock-climbing on the slab. The view was so beautiful, I actually enjoyed these days. I connected with everybody a lot more and did not feel like an outsider. I was a little down and the program director sent me a care package, it was nail polish. I played Ibrahim in rock, paper, scissors. I won so the girls would paint the boys nails. Navy purple and bubblegum pink! Day 9, we reached Steph’s Secret. Day 10, I did solo; the one thing I was nervous about doing on the trip. Every single crew member got their own campsite area and stayed there for 24 hours. Our watches were taken away. We would ration a cinnamon raisin bagel, cheese, and apple for the whole 24 hours. On my solo day, I reflected on my whole trip. I felt stronger. I sat there all day, just thinking about family and friends. I missed them …show more content…
We ran nonstop for 7 miles. I alternated between running and walking most of the time. Ibrahim ran with me through the rocky roads and hills, passing by the dromedaries. I remember seeing the cabins and we knew we made it to basecamp. We finally saw cars and a huge crowd waiting for us at the end. Everybody was cheering us on and clapping. The smell of fresh watermelon hits me. This was it! It was over. We finally got to shower, with cold water. That night we would enjoy lasagna and sleep at basecamp. We cleaned up our banana suits, tarps, and packs in the

My stomach danced salsa and hip-hop at the same time. Yet it was a beautiful place like an enchanted forest, with huge pine trees like a green sky, picturesque blue mountains, and a sunny sky that was boiling. It is an outdoorsy place like a farm in the countryside. Ducks barked and ducklings were getting raised. It was so hot it seemed like the sun was cooking and roasting humans for lunch. Though the lake gave us good news, it was a cold iceberg that day, which was extraordinary news on a day in which you sweat so much. We walked around camp and took nice photos. The cabins welcomed you in, with their wood structure; they were cozy and an oven that kept you warm at night. My hair danced in the wind of a beautiful night, and the stars and fire danced along during…

When we arrived, we were separated. I could not figure out why they separated us, it seemed to be a huge Rube Goldberg device. A few days later, we were told we were going to be showered. This was great news, and reminded me of a previous time in my life. It was when me and my best friend went walking through the forest, and it started raining. Us being kids, we just frollicked in the mud and meandered through the water. When we finally came home, our parents were horrified at how dirty we were. But we refused to bathe, so they wouldn’t let us eat till we bathed. When we did, it felt really good.…

I fell on the boat ramp laughing my tail off. Finally, we got our boats in the water and started packing them down with our supplies. I have never seen so much supplies for a one day trip. We had to make about five trips to get everyone down there and our supplies on the sandbar which is called Little Sugar Loaf. We had about 13 people on that sandbar we were staying that night. We started out by finding a spot and setting up our tents. It didn't take me that long to set up my tent. I mostly helped other set up their tents and sleeping bags and other supplies. There were about four kids that had to carry wood for the fireplace. While others were setting up the grill and lights for tonight. The sun was so hot I was about ready to get in the cool muddy water. I got my chores done for the tents and my buddies and I went swimming in the…

It was the craziest out of all of them. This was the year that we had a new girl come to school, her name was Kirsten. It was the fourth day of school and she was doing fine, then everyone started to hate her, and then would be really mean. She seemed to be cool, I don't know why people didn't like her. Me and my best friend were called into the office and asked to be friends with her, and tell them what the other people are doing her, like being mean or talking bad about her. The experience was the worst at first because if you're friends with her you were cool or talk to. That was hard for me because I have a lot of friends at St. Peters, and I didn't want to not be their friend, but now that I think about it they weren't real friends. So I made the choice to be friends with her and not listen to everyone…

One weekend, seven of us decided to take a trip down from college to my parents' beach cottage in Panama City [Florida]. We were three guys and four girls celebrating our last weekend before beginning our sophomore year. We unloaded the cars and prepared for bed. I did not know then, but it was the last decent night's sleep I would have. We got up the next morning, loaded the cooler with beer and headed for the beach. We laughed, drank and exchanged stories from our freshman year. After finishing an enormous meal, we continued to drink and dance until 1:00 a.m. We had to get back to school early the next day, so we decided to fill the car with gas and get more cigarettes that night. My friend and I hopped in his truck, me in the driver's seat and he in the passenger seat, and headed to an all-night convenience store. We found one store open about two miles down the road. We pulled in, gassed up and headed back to the beach house. It was a straight shot, just a few minutes down a four-lane highway.…
