Culture of the Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Organization
BUS 610: Organizational Behavior
Andree Swanson
November 12, 2012

Culture of the Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Organization
The company for which I work is the Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Organization which supports our soldiers and their families. Within this organization culture is something that is held to a high standard. In our course reading it describes culture into three levels. The three levels are observable artifacts, espoused values, and enacted values. These “three levels of culture interact with one another and influence behaviors in organizations” (Baack, 2012). The way these levels of culture are intertwined into the organization as well as how these functions shape values and culture will be discussed within this essay.
Observable Artifacts Observable “artifacts include the physical signs of an organization 's dominant culture.” (Baack, 2012) This would include but not limited to displays of awards, uniforms, and our social media. Awards that show observable artifacts include our MWR supported of the year and MWR customer service award. These awards include forty hours of annual leave and a plaque displayed for the whole installation to see. This helps for the employees to know that their hard work is being noticed and that they are appreciated. Each facility within the organization has a special uniform they wear in order to distinguish what department they are with. This has become a great help to our customers when we do major events to include all staff. Lastly our social media for our individual departments is an example of observable artifacts. For example, when the aquatic center receives awards, has events, or we do special training we announce these on our Facebook to show the installation what is going on in our own department.
Espoused Values Espoused values “express the primary beliefs of the leadership group.”(Baack, 2012). This means

The government could have placed tighter constraints on the credit market; the government agencies charged with managing banking policies and procedures could’ve formulated a policy that would require that banks were only able to hedge a certain amount of liability as long as they had enough capital to cover double the amount of the liability. The government could also have placed more stringent regulations on banks and related financial institutions to provide proof that the potential buyers of homes could fiscally make the required home/mortgage payments in lieu of the poor economy. This could have been accomplished by verifying their credit score, annual salary, and reviewing 6-12 months of the potential homeowner’s financial statements to ensure their candidacy and responsibility. Another regulation that could have averted the 2008 credit disaster would be requiring all potential home buyers to take a financial course that included content covering how to read legal contracts” or something similar. Yes, this additional step would prolong the home buying process but in the long run it would potentially weed out the vast majority of homeowners that would likely default on their mortgages.…

American Airlines filed for bankruptcy in November 2011. According to an interview with Richard Quest of CNN, Thomas Horton the new CEO of American Airlines stated that the company was forced into bankruptcy because of the cost disadvantages it faced compared to it’s competitors that had already gone through a bankruptcy. The news came as a shock to many. The company had enough money to sustain the losses that it may incur through the next year. Although the company had the money to operate, the company…

In a project, project managers do more than just putting out fires and keeping the project on track. They also innovate and adapt to ever-changing circumstances (Larson & Gray, 2012). With that said, project team members (or resources) are often assigned work outside of the project in question, and may even be involved in other projects in an organization. It is typical in the popular matrix project organization that project team members do not report directly to the project manager, but rather a functional manager. This makes it even more important that the project manager have the skills to get work accomplished through others. In the project life cycle, there will mostly be unexpected issues or concerns that can arise. When these issues or concerns surface, a Project manager must be geared up to deal with them. If project issues are ignored, they can potentially affect the upshot of the project and its completion. In the case of communication strategies in the description of this assignment (based on the textbook), the nature of the project team upon approaching the implementation is a staid, unforeseen, and a crucial one. The following predicaments have been observed, and strategies (as well as resolutions) will be conversed in this assignment:…

Norms are “customary rules that govern behavior in groups and societies” (Bicchieri and Muldoon, 2014), our text (2012) asserts that “Norms can provide vital organizational functions when they clarify the group or organization's key values and convey a sense of identity” (Baack, 2012). The significance of understanding norms within a team setting is that it enables an individual to work more cohesively within the team. By having an understanding of your role on the team along with the expectations for all team members as they relate to the overall objective, allows for team congruence. Communication is an essential element within team development because it allows team members, both established and new, to voice their respective matters and to be heard by all. Communication can also assist in determining a team member’s role within the group.…

Internal communication within a company or business can be defined as “both "official" communication -- memos, guidelines, policies and procedures, etc. -- and the unofficial communication… -- the exchange of ideas and opinions, the development of personal relationships, and the proverbial conversation around the water cooler” (CTB, 2013). The most effective way to communicate with your boss is to use clear, succinct and direct language. I would also suggest employing communication methods (face-to-face meetings vs. email, etc.) that you recognize to be your bosses chosen communication method(s). Internal communication with a superior should typically be void of emotion; “Maintain an even and professional tone throughout. If you need to communicate with your boss about a personal problem, a problem with a co-worker, or some other issue that causes you to feel emotional, wait until you are clear-headed and the emotion has passed before attempting communication” (Reeves, 2014). When communicating with a peer there tends to be more lax in formalities and sometimes diction. Business peers are colleagues – they tend to have similar incomes and status in the office thus speaking to them can be similar to speaking with a classmate, friend, or neighbor. When communicating with a subordinate, a person whose business “rank” is lower than the position you hold, I’ve found both through personal experience and through research that communication either takes an air of superiority vs. inferiority – the subordinate worker is talked down to and made to feel less-than. Conversely, when communicating with a subordinate many persons assume a position of empathy and accommodation – they remember what it was like being a subordinate either positively or not, and want to pass along the necessary information to their colleagues with an air of compassion while also educating on the dos and don’ts of corporate life. There would certainly be differences in the…

An environmental law that is relevant to my current and future employer, which is myself since I am self-employed, is the Clean Air Act (CAA). As a fitness professional I conduct personal training, small group training and outdoor fitness boot camp classes during nearly ¾ of any given year. Obviously I cannot predict air pollution in the same way EPA experts can but I do have firsthand experience of conducting these various fitness activities outdoors in cities where air pollution was considerably higher than other metropolitan areas in the country, and how participants fared. By relating my fitness business to environmental air pollution may seem like a stretch but please consider that I taught outdoor classes in New York City just weeks following the September 11th attacks. The air was rancid, smelled like a demolition site (which I am very familiar with having grown-up with a father who ran a demolition company), and the mixture of fumes and unrecognizable stench, made commuting in the area difficult, let alone participation in high-level cardiovascular exercises. “The Clean Air Act, which was last amended in 1990, requires EPA to set National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for wide-spread pollutants from numerous and diverse sources considered harmful to public health and the environment. The Clean Air Act established two types of national air quality standards. Primary standards set limits to protect public health, including the health of at-risk populations such as people with pre-existing heart or lung disease (such as asthmatics), children, and older adults. Secondary standards set limits to protect public welfare, including protection against visibility impairment, damage to animals, crops, vegetation, and buildings. The Clean Air Act requires periodic review of the science upon which the standards are based and the standards themselves” (EPA, 2013). Obviously air standards were not top priority during the initial weeks…

Our text defines self-esteem as “a belief about how a person evaluates his or her self-worth as part of an overall self-evaluation” (Baack, 2012), whereas self-efficacy is the “extent to which people believe they can perform a behavior to produce a particular desired outcome” (Lu, Chang & Lai, 2011). Self-esteem and self-efficacy are interrelated; using this graduate degree from Ashford as an example – having successfully completed an undergraduate degree with honors at Ashford provides me with the high self-efficacy that I can also complete a graduate degree. Similarly, completing courses with good grades boosts self-esteem by reinforcing a positive self-image. On the contrary, if a person failed to achieve a goal, like graduating from college, their self-esteem would be low(er) and their self-efficacy about higher education would also be low. An external forces that can impact self-efficacy are persuasion and encouragement. These forces can come from peers, colleagues, family, or romantic partners (Baack, 2012), and help to strengthen a person’s innate belief in themselves, which can translate into successes in other areas of their life.…

Emotional intelligence (EI) can be described as “a person's ability to detect and manage emotional cues and information” (Baack, 2012), and it is comprised of five features: self-awareness, self-management, self-motivation, empathy, and social skills. Cognitive abilities are skills that allow people the capability to process information, reason, remember, and relate whereas non-cognitive abilities can include things like “persistence, self-control, curiosity, conscientiousness, grit and self-confidence” (Tough, 2013). EI by any definition is really a combination of cognitive and emotional abilities; “the essence of EI is the integration of the emotional centers of the brain and the cognitive centers…EI [is] a set of skills that involve processing information about emotion” (Singh, 2008). I employ emotional intelligence on a daily basis when interacting with strangers while out running errands. Having the wherewithal to discern another person’s mood or intention based on their non-verbal cues and their willingness to engage in conversation or interaction draws from the empathy, self-awareness, and social skills or EI.…

The term power can be defined different ways but our text, Organizational Behavior (2012), maintains that “power is the ability to influence the behaviors of others using formal and informal means” (Baack, 2012). Power does not necessarily have to equate with results; a powerful person can lead an organization or offer their opinion to others who, based on the speaker/leaders inherent power, will respond accordingly. Power also describes “any ability to do something, including abilities of non-human agents. So we speak of the ‘power of an engine or a machine’, the ‘power of speech’ or ‘the power of the West’” (Hamilton, 2013). The primary distinction between power and domination is that one person or group has the power to do something versus the power over something or someone else. Oftentimes, leaders such as managers or organizational heads, take the power of their position and further it to that of a dominator who commands their subordinates, offers ultimatums, and manages in an autocratic sometimes tyrannical manner. Power and domination can work concurrently if balance is employed. A leader can take the power of their position to agreeably get subordinates to perform in a specific manner – the balancing act is exercising both power and domination in a way that isn’t abrasive, by figuring out a way to make employees or subordinates feel involved in the decision-making and action processes.…

Introduction It is often accepted the concept of management has been foreseen as the forefront of all organisational (Ng, 2011). Mullins (1987) highlights, management is perceived core fundament for the effective operation of a work based organisation. Throughout, the literature it is widely explored upon, the general concept of management. Moreover, there have been many studies which focus upon the different styles of management (Stamp, 2007). In addition, due to the rapid development and diversification of organisations, there has been considerable amounts of research into the communication systems used in relation to managers. (More, 1998; Poon et al, 2003). Furthermore, the research of Varey (1996) highlights, there is the need to study what managers and those who are managed mean by communication and what they do and do not do when communicating. The purpose of this analysis is to investigate the failures of the management of the NHS childcare services, which led to the tragic death of Baby Peter Connolly. Due to the tragic loss of such a young life, an inquest was made into how such a tragedy was allowed to occur. Therefore a full…

Culture is a common word that people generally use in relation to genealogy, country of origin, language and the way people speak, what they eat, and their customs.
