What Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan Means To Me

What Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan means to me is success. Success in showing that I have remained committed to my Soo Bahk Do training and will continue to better my life through the concepts and values that the Soo Bahk Do classes provide me. Some of these values and concepts are commitment, respect, discipline, courage, humility, honesty, and speed control. What I have learned in my Soo Bahk Do classes has helped me both inside and outside the dojang. Here are each of the values I listed above and how I feel they apply to my life inside and outside the dojang.

Commitment to me means to totally dedicate myself to something. Pouring all my energy into the event, team or task I have chosen to be a part of because I made the choice to be committed to it. Inside the dojang I am committed to doing my best to improve my forms and techniques so I am ready to test for the next rank. I am committed to always being on my best behavior so that I am a role model for the younger students. I am committed to remaining focused on the lessons being taught, and to respect everyone in the class. I am committed to other activities outside the dojang like my travel soccer team, the marching band at high school and my youth group at church. Sometimes it is hard to want to come to class but the only way I will get better at Soo Bahk Do is to make it to class and practice hard. I am committed to making it to class and putting some time in outside of the practices so I can excel at my techniques and be ready for my Cho Dan test.

To me respect means looking up to someone or something and letting the person know that you care about how they feel. When I was a little kid, I was always told to respect my elders which meant I was not to talk back to them or make fun of them and I was to listen to them when they spoke. Inside the dojang I show respect to everyone in my Soo

From past experiences I have learned the real meaning of respect. This word is more powerful than one can imagine. With respect comes unselfishness. When people respect others, they are treated equally. My mother and father always told me to be tactful in the way I treated others, so I would also be respected. It has worked in the past and will always hold true in the future. If someone respects another with proper judgment, people feel good inside which gives them a sense of integrity. When I give respect and witness how it makes others feel, I feel like more of a person. I feel proud. Honored.…

What does respect mean to you? To me, respect means following the golden rule. It means treating others with kindness, love, generosity, and having polite manners. “Treat others as you would like to be treated.” That is the golden rule, is it not? Who wouldn’t want to be treated with kindness? Who wouldn’t want to be around someone with manners and cleanliness? Respect is being considerate to others and their feelings and beliefs. Respect isn’t just for others though, you need to respect yourself as well; take care of yourself and be presentable. If you would like to be treated with respect, you, first, need to learn to respect yourself and others. Once that is accomplished, others will learn to respect you.…
