    A. Jeannette, at the beginning of the story, is a prosperous news reporter in a pretty dress on her way to a very fancy party. This is the first glimpse we see of her, but the book is done as a ‘flashback’ of sorts, so even though technically she is a 30-something woman at the beginning of the story, she transitions back to when she was 3 years old. She talks, at least when she was talking with her mother when she was older, as if she knows what she’s talking of. She knows who ‘she’ is, even if she cannot at first come to terms with who her parents are. She begins by seeing her mother digging through the trash while she was on her way to a party. This upsets her enough to tell the cab driver to turn around so she could go back home.…

A retired professor at Southeastern Louisiana University, Tim Gautreaux is also a novelist and short story writer. His works are very descriptive; the reader is able to visualize what the plot of the story is like. His stories have a typical Louisiana setting and they focus mainly on uneducated, ordinary people of the countryside who succumb to moral or ethical dilemmas. The Kirkus Reviews explains his works as: “A terrific debut collection from a Louisiana writer whose stylish, sympathetic understanding of working-class sensibilities and Cajun culture gives his work a flavor and universality unique among contemporary writers” (Kane 54). In his short stories “The Courtship of Merlin LeBlanc,” “Easy…

    La Haine Review

“La Haine”, a 93 minute film regarding about three adolescents(Vincent Cassel, Hubert Kounde, and Said Taghmaoui) who struggle to cope in a poverty-stricken environment in which hatred and violence are part of everyday life. Even the title “La Haine” which is a French word, translated to 'The Hatred' suggests what the film is about. Based on a true event, “La Haine” is inspired by a real event where a young man was murdered while being questioned at a Parisian Police station. In exploring racism in the Paris suburbs, this film has a direct contrast with more typical French films, such as Amelie(2001) which presents a far more romantic and idyllic vision of French life. The beginning of La 'Haine' shows the beating of a Parisian in comparison to the beginning of Malcolm X which in the beginning, shows the beating of Rodney King and these two have a direct comparison as they both represent inequality as those people being beaten up had done no crime or malignant deed to deserve the beatings. “La Haine” has such a huge impact as the film remakes how the riots in the outskirts of Paris were created and how the three adolescents from different ethnic backgrounds, where Vinz is Jewish, Said is Arab and Hubert is African, cope with ongoing riots. The director(Mathieu Kassovitz) inspiration was the riots of LA and the riots in Paris and how the riots had similar effects.…

    Big Fish Movie Review

Big Fish is a story about a man, Edward Bloom, who is a magnificent story teller, and his son—William Bloom—who has a grudge against these stories. The movie was directed by Tim Burton in 2003, which he based off the Big Fish book written in 1988 by Daniel Wallace. Throughout the movie we see not only the present life of Edward Bloom, but the many past stories of his childhood and adult life. We are also introduced to several other characters including the younger version of Edward Bloom, Edward’s wife—Sandra, and Will’s wife— Penelope. The stories told in the movie are in Edward’s point of view, and we get many glimpses of where, what, and who Edward has done and met throughout his life. These range from going to a witch’s house and seeing his time and reason for death, to being in a circus, and even to falling in love with his present wife Sandra.…

The film Window to Paris was a humorous comedy that put the serious economic state of Russia into a funny, understandable movie. Throughout the movie you see examples of how Russia is hurting. In the beginning when the big crowd of people was told there is no more vodka, when Nicholi’s friend first shows him the window and they walk around the streets of Paris, his friend constantly points out ways in which the Parisians are fat, greedy, unworthy, and take things for granted. When walking by the meat stand, he states that they have all this meat and no one to buy it. All that meat is going to go bad but the butchers are not willing to give it away. When Nicholi was eating dinner with his friend the violin player, they notice an ordinary couple having dinner behind them. That couple was talking about the food they are eating. When Nicholi and his friend were back in Russia, drinking vodka and sharing one pickle, they were talking about the arts, music, and how to better Russia. It makes me think about how much I take for granted each day here. When I go out to eat I usually talk about how good or bad the food I am served is, what I should be doing is enjoying my life and spending time with my family and friends while out to eat. Most people are not as lucky as me. I enjoyed the Pied Piper act that Nicholi puts on to get the students to listen to him. Granted that the way that the students got back to Russia is virtually impossible nowadays, I still found it humorous how they executed their plan. In conclusion, I found this movie to be quite entertaining and it gave me a great aspect on the differences between Russian humor and American…
