Best Gift Ever
Genieve Colemon Professor David Pulling English 1001, Summer 2009 15 June 2009 Best Gifts Ever Expensive gifts from a love one is a wonderful gesture, but it could make the person feel uneasyaccepting such a gift. Receiving an inexpensive present from a friend or family member that comes from the heart has more sentimental value to me than a gift that cost several hundred dollars. When I decided to write this essay three items that were given to me on special occasions stood out the most. The first inexpensive gift that I received was on Mother’s Day 2004, my children handed me a small red Jewry box from Wal-Mart. I was surprised to have received a beautiful jewelrybox from my young boys. I opened the box to find a small gold plated necklace, the shape of a heart. Although, the necklace is not expensive it holds a special place in my heart. This was the first present given to me on Mother’s Day by my children. The necklace is safely secure in a chain holder on the bedroom dresser. Since the metal can tarnish from being in contact with skin, clear nail polish was applied to keep in pristine condition. Here is another example of an inexpensive gift, for my twenty fifth birthdaymy mother gave me a homemade cookbook. Coming from a family that can cook extravagantdishes is a good thing. The problem with this situation lies with me not being able to cook a simple egg without burning it. Having to prepare different meals three times a day became a horrible chore for my family. We were very appreciative for the one subject tablet filled with easy step by step instructions on how to prepare meals properly. This gift not only holds a place in my heart, but most of all in my stomach.

In 1888 Vincent Van Gogh painted Vincent’s Bed in Arles a brightly painted oil on canvas, measuring to 72x 90cm, this was of his little bedroom in France. When one thinks of a bedroom it brings about emotions of safety. One’s personal sanctuary where the world does not exist, no pains of reality can touch you. It seems when one closes their bedroom door all mundane thoughts are gone and you are left with your imagination. One who agrees with this interpretation is Jane Flanders. Jane Flanders is a highly educated woman, as she attended Mawr College and Columbia University, she has three books of poems published and has won many awards. A person whose mind is always running and always working such as hers can agree that rest for the imagination is the best way to strengthen it. One simple painting of his bed and petite, creaky room and one simple four stanza poem shows how materialistic possessions can never reflect the human soul, simplicity in life heightens creativity and how solitude doesn’t have to be a negative aspect in life.…
