Since I was about ten years old, I’ve noticed that small children have no sense of real fear or danger. I have also observed that small children are very possessive and that if a small child is having trouble with something or wants to do something, whether it’s opening a jar, reaching the counter to get something they want, or just opening a new toy, they always want to do it by themselves. After reading Beowulf and comparing it to my observations, I have concluded that Beowulf possesses some traits of a small child. Beowulf is characterized as a medieval Geatish warrior willing to take on any challenge in order to make a name for himself and is faster than a sea monster, stronger than a demon, more powerful than a dragon. Even with all of these heroic traits, he still acts like a child in many ways.…

I have heard of your troubles with Grendel, I am personally reaching out to you to have the ability to take on Grendel. My father was a great warrior and I was passed on to become the next greatest one. I have many qualifications to take on Grendel such as having fought in many battles before and being successful in them.…

The epic of Beowulf reveals three monster archetypes, each one relates to an internal struggle Beowulf is facing. His battles between each monster eventually lead to his victory over each inner demon he is dealing with. Beowulf portrays this when he successfully defeats Grendel’s Mother “The water was calm and clean, the whole/ Huge lake was peaceful once the demons who’d lived/ in it/ Were dead.../They left the lake together.../Behind them the water slowly thickened/ As the monsters’ blood came seeping up”(ll. 1620-1631). As Beowulf walks away he assumes the battle is over, but the water begins to slowly thicken. This symbolizes how Beowulf is still struggling with his internal demons even though the initial victory against Grendel’s mother was won. This gives insight into how each battle plays a role into Beowulf’s internal struggle, as he soon discovers in order to overcome each demon he must first defeat the monster that represents this struggle.…
