CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Monitoring is one of the great responsibilities of a teacher. This includes writing lesson plans, teaching lessons to his/her students, and recording the performance of the students. Teachers have a lot of things to do in everyday routine, due to this everyday task, they consume much time in doing paper works and preparing some devices as they are required to do, because they perform these tasks manually.
The researchers will create an automated monitoring and attendance system for students using barcode reader. Using the barcode reader, the teacher will have access to the profile of each student, which will be recognized by reading his or her identification card. At the same time, this system will send message to the parents to notify them that their child is within the school premises. Since the students will just put their ID’s direct to the barcode reader, the teacher will have no more hustle in monitoring the attendance of his/her students. Moreover, the school can assure the security of their students because it will recognize the attendance of each student. The parents are also assured of the presence of their child in school. There is a need to develop a new system because of the complaints of most of the teachers about their everyday tasks. The new system will provide an easier process for the teachers in monitoring the students and in notifying the parents through SMS. Therefore, the number of tasks to be done by teachers will be lessened. 2
1.2 Statement of the Problem
As we conduct an interview, teachers always complain about their difficulty in accomplishing manual tasks. As a result, they sometimes cannot finish their daily tasks

The American heritage dictionary describes monitoring as scrutinizing or checking systematically with a view to collecting certain specified categories of data (Cotton, 1988). Another definition for monitoring that is more closely related to the field of education is, “activities pursued by the teacher to keep track of student learning for purposes of making instructional decisions and providing feedback to students on their progress”(Cotton, 1988). Both definitions accurately describe what effective teachers do when they monitor students’ performance and understanding of lesson material. Research shows that there is a strong correlation between effective student monitoring and student achievement(Cotton, 1988). Teachers who regularly implement effective monitoring strategies into their classrooms have more students who succeed academically. Monitoring is an essential component of the learning process and effective teaching; there are various types of monitoring strategies that knowledgeable and productive teachers use in the classroom.…

Most educational institutions' administrators are concerned about student irregular attendance. Truancies can affect student overall academic performance. The conventional method of taking attendance by calling names or signing on paper is very time consuming and insecure, hence inefficient. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based attendance system is one of the solutions to address this problem. This system can be used to take attendance for student in school, college, and university. It also can be used to take attendance for workers in working places. Its ability to uniquely identify each person based on their RFID tag type of ID card make the process of taking the attendance easier, faster and secure as compared to conventional method. Students or workers only need to place their ID card on the reader and their attendance will be taken immediately. With real time clock capability of the system, attendance taken will be more accurate since the time for the attendance taken will be recorded. The system can be connected to the computer through RS232 or Universal Serial Bus (USB) port and store the attendance taken inside database. An alternative way of viewing the recorded attendance is by using HyperTerminal software. A prototype of the system has been successfully fabricated.…

In this study, the developer is hoping to develop a system that will help not only the students, but the whole campus as well. Adding function for the provided identification barcode of the ID school, and keeping track of students who will be enrolled to avoid trespassers that may cause unlikely activities such as stolen valuables, and the like, therefore will allow professors, guards, and staff ease in keeping the campus secured and monitored during the entrance of students – a system that will be automated, user-friendly, time effective, and efficient.…

In this paper we review the various computerized system which is being developed by using different techniques. Based on this review a new approach for employee attendance is proposed by using biometric device to be used for various schools or academic institutes. Biometric technologies is the fingerprint recognition system; by placing a finger on the scanner, it allows the person to time in or out and ensures that employees cannot time in for one another, thereby preventing employee time theft. In other words, instead of requiring personal identification cards, keys or passwords of other person, biometrics can identify fingerprints of an individual for easy and convenient verification.…

4 Abstract Our project aims at designing an student attendance system which could effectively manage attendance of students at institutes like NIT Rourkela. Attendance is marked after student identification. For student identification, a fingerprint recognition based identification system is used. Fingerprints are considered to be the best and fastest method for biometric identification. They are secure to use, unique for every person and does not change in one’s lifetime. Fingerprint recognition is a mature field today, but still identifying individual from a set of enrolled fingerprints is a time taking process. It was our responsibility to improve the fingerprint identification system for…
