Art In Italian Renaissance
The Renaissance began in Italy during the 14th century and lasted until the 16th century. It brought about a historically gran period of achievement and triumph in all aspects, particularly cultural. One major area of development during this era was artistic expansion. Art evolved during the Italian Renaissance due to changes in lifestyle, the emergence of new artists, and along with them, new art styles. Many things were changing during the renaissance, including the way people lived. New forms of philosophy came about, such as Humanism. As Humanism gained popularity, the Roman Catholic Church lost its strong hold on most of Europe. The desires of society changed from allegiances to money. They were often taught by their fathers, and this was how many women became artists. While women were allowed to participate in the arts during the Renaissance, it was not until the 19th century that women could use live subjects.
With the manifestation of both these new artists and these new philosophies it is inevitable that new art styles came about. Both of these elements created an awareness of nature, learning, and understanding of the individual. All of these things combined allowed for realistic forms, and natural depictions. Slowly society moved from glorification of spirituality to glorification of human nature, and it is very apparent in the paintings and sculptures of the Italian Renaissance.
It is clear that art during the Renaissance shaped society just as society shaped it. Through new ways of thinking and living, new artists, and new styles, the Renaissance truly was a renewal for art. Even in our modern world, art and society function hand in hand. Art is a reflection of society, just as society is a reflection of its art. To this day, our artwork is molded by emerging artists who bring with them their own personal styles.
