Quarter Two – Extra Credit Movie Review on “Gangs of New York”
If a movie states, “based on a true story”, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all history or facts portrayed in the movie are true. Most of the time directors of the movies place such words in the beginning of the movie to gain more support of the public and depict instances that may or may not be one hundred percent accurate. Taking history down a creative route can have its positive notes and its negative. Portraying history in a movie allows filmmakers to make a point about a modern issue or promote an ongoing historical topic. Just exemplifying history in a movie, doesn’t depict the fact that it is accurate. “Gangs of New York ” directed by Martin Scorsese in 2002, and set in 1863, explains the Irish immigration and ongoing Civil War. This movie is quiet t historically accurate, but still has some minor inaccuracies.
The movie starts with the main character’s story in 1863, as he returns to the Five Points from an orphanage in which he spent most of his childhood. Amsterdam Valon’s (the main character), father was a Catholic Priest, and leader of an Irish immigrant group called the Dead Rabbits. His father was killed by Bill ‘The Butcher’ Cutting, a Native American Protestant leader. Therefore, Valon returns to the Five Points to retaliate his father’s death by killing the Butcher. During his attempts, Amsterdam Valon fell in love with a Native “pickpocket”, Jenny. The film evolves with Amsterdam getting closer under his enemy’s wings and finally revealing his motives and identity, thus leading to the 1863 Draft Riot. Eventually, the Irish win because their leader kills the Natives' leader. First of all, there are several reasons as to why the movie is historically accurate. The birth of the actual Gangs against New York can be credited to the Five Points neighborhood. This neighborhood became home to many Irish immigrants and the

The films that are discussed in “Re-viewing the Past” have historical inaccuracies. As much as film makers want to depict the actually story correctly, there is always something that they leave out or exaggerate. The inaccuracy described in Black Robe was due to the lack of knowledge coming from the missionaries' letters. The letters claimed that the Indians agreed to the 1,500 mile journey with Laforgue. However, the author is stating that part was inaccurate. In The Crucible the affair between Abigail Williams and John Proctor was exaggerated due to the lack of evidence. It does seem a little outlandish because the real Proctor was 60 years old and Abigail was only 11. The filmmaker just wanted to make a more dramatic effect to the movie. Also, the testimony of the Proctor's were altered to make the adulterous affair seem more legitimate. In the well known movie, The Patriot, the retelling of the war of the south was misrepresented. There was no such person as Benjamin Martin or the infamous burning of the church the movie reenacts. The author talks about the debate on whether or not the movie accurately describes warfare being civilized. There were two movies titled The Alamo in which both reenact the events surrounding the defense of the Alamo. The first movie made shows Crockett stealing cattle and destroying artillery. However, there is no evidence in history detailing his actions. Also, both movies wrongly tell Santa Anna's attack on the Alamo because he didn't truly have the heavy artillery as the movie shows. The last film, Cold Mountain, is not based on any historical events. It is solely for entertainment to describe the emotional turmoil the Civil War caused. Although each movie has inaccuracies overall they each describe the events that happened in each time period.…

Τhe film I chose to critique this week is the classic family comedy Home Alone (1990) directed by Chris Columbus. Leading actors in this film is eight year old Kevin McCallister played by Macaulay Culkin, along with Peter McCallister, the father, played by John Heard, Mrs. McCallister played by Catherine O’Hara, Marv, who is the first burglar, played by Daniel Stern, and Harry, the other burglar played by Joe Pesci. Other characters in this film are Buzz the brother, mean Uncle Frank, and creepy old man Marley. The title of the film hints to the audience that someone is home alone, but the viewer does not know what happens in the story until watching the film, which makes it more interesting. This film is about a large family who gets together for a Christmas trip to Paris, but the night before they leave there is a wind storm, which knocks out all of the power, which means their alarm clock does not go off, and they sleep in. This puts them in a mad rush to get to the airport, in turn leaving Kevin behind, and the rest continue on to a fun family adventure.…

The organization of the book is interesting as well being that it is not done in a linear fashion. Anbinder uses key questions to subhead the chapters, such as “How they worked“ or “ How they lived” which gives answers key questions about these peoples’ daily lives. Anbinder also uses short prologues that describe key historical persons that are featured in the next chapter which is quite interesting when thinking about key figures in history being involved in this story. Throughout the book, Anbinder paints a portrait of a rough slum where immigrants from all over Europe, and later from Asia, created their lives. Five points was a place of opportunity. It was a place where cultures clashed and political…

In the beginning of the film it focuses mainly on a vision that a man named Jim Miller had. What makes this man so significant is that he had a dream where he found himself riding along plains in South Dakota. Before he had the chance to awaken from his dream, he came across a riverbank in Minnesota and had seen 38 of his native ancestors all hung in Mankato. Prior to the dream, Jim knew nothing about the largest execution recorded in American history.…

The story kicks off in 1959 with the tale of the birth of Ian, the narrator. His father rushes his wife to the hospital because she is in labour. This results in Ian’s parents barely making the last Ferry boat to Fort Vermillion, allowing them to meet Bud Peyen, who later becomes Ian’s father’s closest friend. The first few chapters of the book are centered on Ian’s father, Hank, and his issues with alcoholism, unemployment, and finally abandonment. After Hank leaves Ian’s mother and their six children, the story switches its focus to the relationships between the natives and the whites. Most of the whites and natives are divided with the exceptions particularly Ian and his best friend, Lloyd Loonskin. Lloyd is first introduced…

Many of the historical events in this film have been fictionalized, mainly the dates, but I agree with the director when he stated that otherwise it would be called a documentary and not a fictional film. There are probably many facts that are wrong in this film, but in my opinion only someone who has a vast knowledge of these events would notice.…

The movie Colors displays the bad things in gangs like how easy it could be to join a gang and to distribute the drugs for them. This movie portrays the working of a gang in California.. The movie also showed how the older gang members got the younger members to go out and sell the drugs for them. The idea behind this was that if the younger person was to get caught there would be a lesser chance that they would rat on the main dealer and they would get a lesser punishment, as juveniles. In the movie they always show you the parts of the gangs running from the police or doing something bad like the drugs and violence. What the movie does not show you how the gangs contributed to the society or if they did where is it then. The movie was based on the fact that gangs are bad and that is how they showed it.…

Gangs of New York is just perfect entertainment. It is an enthralling, bloody, melodramatic epic that more than justifies its two and one half hour running time. In Gangs director Martin Scorsese spins another tale of the New York underworld but with a twist. Instead of the mid-twentieth century organized crime milieu of Goodfellas, Scorsese ventures back to the 19th century to show us the origin of the modern street gang.…
