Squealer; Pathos, ethos, logos. Animal Farm is a story by George Orwell. This story is an allegory for the Russian Revolution. It takes place on Manor Farm in England and follows events that take place when a group of animals choose to overthrow their unloving farmer, Mr. Jones. When the animal government starts becoming increasingly corrupt, Squealer, who is an extremely persuasive speaker, uses several strategies such as Pathos, Ethos and Logos to make the other animals see and agree with his points. Squealer uses pathos to get the other animals to see his point. After the expulsion of Snowball, Squealer has to try and convince the other animals by saying, “I trust that every animal here appreciates the sacrifice that comrade Napoleon has made in taking this extra labor upon himself” (39). This just says how Napoleon took it upon himself to get rid of the traitor. Squealer can convince the other animals to do or think just about anything. This is one way he uses Pathos to convince them. Post termination of Snowball, Squealer points out that, “One false step and our enemies would be upon us. Surely, Comrades you do not want Jones back” (39). This quote shows how Squealer manipulates his words to make the other animals see why they got rid of Snowball. This quote supports my point because it shows that the animals just automatically believe Squealer, despite his convincing them. As is clear from these examples that Squealer uses several ways to convince people including Pathos. Additionally he also uses Ethos to get his point across. When it was discovered that Snowball was coming to the farm at night, Squealer had to make sure they thought it was him. “Snowball was in league with Jones from the very start!”(55). This is a good example because even though some of the animals disagree, Squealer continues to push the idea. By this he shows that even with doubt, he makes their disagreements dissolve away.
