Accountability of Equipment
The reason I am writing this essay is because leaving ones equipment laying around degrades the efficiency of the work environment. It binds up all the components that naturally flow causing more problems to arise that are normally not present. Typical the machine is free of problems but, is now faced with correcting the issue at hand rather than carrying on with its work. If even a single component is out of place the unit doesn’t function properly and the whole suffers. An old saying comes to mind that describes this situation and the point I’m trying to make perfectly.
For want of a nail the shoe was lost.
For want of a shoe the horse was lost.
For want of a horse the rider was lost.
For want of a rider the message was lost.
For want of a message the battle was lost.
For want of a battle the kingdom was lost.
And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.
I believe this point conveys the meaning of this paper quiet well. It demonstrates the issues that lacking a single component can have on the group as a whole. The three main points I am going to hit on in this paper are decreased individual readiness, overall unit readiness, and the individuals who benefit from my inability to maintain my equipment.

When I say individual readiness I am talking about my efficiency as one to be able to do my required task weather in training or in a combat situation in this particular instant I lost accountability for my MITCH without it I am unable to perform basic task that are required by me. All training I can conduct is halted. There are few options that are available for me I can either continue without the proper head gear and what I am capable of doing is greatly reduced and the rest of the team and squad are left to fill in and are greatly weakened. All because one person felt they could be unaccountable for one piece of equipment.     How do we emphasize the importance of the role that each sustainment soldier plays? How many times have you gone through an MKT line and food has run out? I bet the cooks ate, though. I could call out a number of roles that sustainment plays but then I would just be bitching. When sustainment starts to lack, due to any number of reasons, it is not the sustainment soldiers that suffer. It is those soldiers on the front lines, if there is such a thing anymore, that suffer most. Let the infantry unit who is taking the fight to the enemy run out of ammo, fuel, water, or food. I never want to see that happen but it seems that we only learn through our failures. We, as American Soldiers/Airmen/Sailors/Marines, are also our biggest problem.     The leadership model in ADRP 6-22 (2012) shows that military and professional bearing, fitness, confidence, and resilience affect one’s presence (p. 1-5). Throughout Benavidez’s life, he created a presence that is still seen and felt today. During a speech given in 1991, long after his retirement, Benavidez showed his military and personal bearing. Benavidez said, “It makes me feel great when I put my uniform on. That’s the best piece of clothing I have ever owned. And hey I wear it all the time, I don’t care what other people think. They think I don’t have civilian clothes. I don’t care. It is great to be in uniform. . . And I get a haircut every Friday” (Losch & Kingsbury, 2017). Benavidez demonstrated his fitness, confidence, and resilience during his recovery from his first wound in Vietnam. In 1965, Benavidez stepped on a mine, which paralyzed him from the waist down (Benavidez, 1991, para. 7). Against his doctors’ wishes, Benavidez would “slip out of bed and crawl to a wall using my elbows and chin. My back would just be killing me and I’d be crying, but I get to the wall and I’d stand there like Kaw-Liga, the Indian. I’d stand and move my toes, right and left every single chance I got” (Benavidez, 1991, para. 7). Nine months later, Benavidez limped out of the hospital on his own (Benavidez, 1991, para. 9).     There are many important reasons to be checking your gear constantly to keep proper issued gear accountability as an Infantryman in the United States Marine Corps or any other MOS in the Marine Corps as well. It is the Marines responsibility to always have proper issued gear accountability at all times. Whenever you have a pause through your patrols, raids, or movements the Marines always want to take a quick check to make sure that you have your issued or serialized gear as well as everything else that you or your team of Marines came on that mission with. It is your job to take responsibility and check yourself as well as your other marines to ensure nothing has gone missing. Proper issued gear accountability can range from the most important pieces of Marine Corps issued gear such as your rifle all the way down to your tourniquet. You always want to have serialized issued gear such as your night vision goggles dummy corded to your body. In doing so your issued gear that can be dummy corded is dummy corded to you, you will have a lot less chance to loose any of your gear or anything else you are carrying with you. In case that a Marine is moving or running, even if your issued gear comes absent from the pouch or pocket you are carrying them in they will not come completely off your body. Any serialized issued gear that the Marine is carrying on that Marines body needs to always be dummy corded to that Marine or even attached the Marines flak jacket. That also includes dummy cording the issued gear that is attached to that Marines rifle directly. If you lose gear that is crucial to the mission then that means that you have to stop find it and then move on and that takes time we as marines don’t have to waste, every second is vital.     The importance of bringing all equipment to WLC is based solely on being accountable and as a leader that in tells a lot. If you you are not accountable as a leader, it hurts not only yourself, but the platoon, company or unit as a whole. Being accountable by Army standards, means being dependable-arriving to work and appointments on time, meeting deadlines, being in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing at the right time, IN THE RIGHT UNIFORM.
