AHIMA Code Of Ethics Summary
The purpose of this memorandum is to analyze and evaluate the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) Code of Ethics, as well as see if there is any room for improvement. I chose the AHIMA Code of Ethics because I plan to be a part of this association later in my career.
Key points of the AHIMA Code of Ethics
The AHIMA code of ethics includes 11 main points. These main points conclude that all Health Information Management professionals shall: Advocate, uphold, and defend the individual's right to privacy and the doctrine of confidentiality in the use and disclosure of information; Put service and the health and welfare of persons before self-interest and conduct oneself in the practice of the profession so as to bring honor to oneself, their peers, and to the health information management profession; Preserve, protect, and secure personal health information in any form or medium and hold in the highest regards health information and other information of a confidential nature obtained in an official capacity, taking into account the applicable statutes and regulations; Refuse to participate in or

This code of ethics does not provide a model for ethical decision making, but does mention it in the guidelines. It states to “Refuse to participate in or conceal unethical practices or procedures and report such practices.” Under this heading, it includes that all health information management professionals should act professional and ethical at all times, while being knowledgeable about policies and taking adequate measures to discourage unethical co-workers. While it does not provide a guideline for ethical decision making, it does include what is considered unethical, such as participating in, condoning, or being associated with dishonesty, fraud, abuse or deception, with a list of
