5ml Of Cyclohexanone Lab Report
Preparation
In a dry round bottom flask, 1.5mL of cyclohexanone was added with 5mL of methanol. The solution was cooled in an ice bath for 3 minutes after which 0.2g of sodium borohydride was measured and added to the solution. Upon mixing, a gas was formed (bubbles). The round bottom flask was removed from the ice bath and placed at room temperature. After 10 minutes at room temperature, 5.0mL of 3M NaOH and 2.0mL of distilled water was added to the solution.

Isolation and Characterization
The solution was placed in a 125mL separatory funnel in which 5mL of dichloromethane and 5mL of NaCl solution were added to it. The separatory funnel was shaken three times and the solution was left to sit until two distinct layers formed. The top aqueous

In terms of percent recovery for cyclohexane, it can be concluded that there was a higher yield of cyclohexane collected when the compound underwent simple distillation than when the compound underwent fractional distillation. For toluene, both simple and fractional distillation produced the same quantity, deeming it appropriate to use either technique only in regards to collecting toluene. Simple distillation is considered more effective when the boiling point differences between the two substances are high, which is the primary reason why simple distillation produced a higher yield and thus, a higher percent recovery. Fractional distillation in this case, produced only 74% of the original amount of cyclohexane that was entered into the apparatus…

This flask was placed in a water bath on a magnetic stirrer. 3 mL of of 6% aqueous sodium hypochlorite was slowly added to the flask while maintaining a temperature below 30 degrees celsius. After thirty minutes a Starch/Iodine test was conducted to test for excess sodium hypochlorite, the strip did not change color so an additional 0.5 mL of reagent was added and allowed to mix for five more minutes. This process was repeated again and at 40 minutes the reagent was in excess. The reacted mixture was then added to a beaker containing 10 mL of saturated sodium chloride and a small piece of ice.…

The mixture (sample number: 27) was dissolved in 200 mL of CH2Cl2 and then extracted with 10% NaOH. The acid was removed by adding 3 x 50 mL of 10% NaOH. The neutral component in CH2Cl2 solution was set aside. The NaOH extracts were combined and then washed with 15 mL of CH2Cl2. The aqueous solution was acidified with 10% HCl. The solid yield (neutral component) was collected by vacuum filtration whereas the liquid yield (acidic component) was extracted into CH2Cl2 (3x25 mL). The acidic compound was then washed with 100 mL of water, dried over MgSO4, filtered. The solvent CH2Cl2 then was removed by evaporating it.…

The experiment is separated into two sections involving different solvent conditions, which include acetone and cyclohexane. A stock solution of 3.0 mM SP in acetone was prepared and diluted to 100 mL of 0.30 mM SP. In addition, a stock solution of 0.1 M TFA in acetone was prepared prior to the experiment. From the stock solutions, a four samples were made with varying SP concentrations ranging from 0.05 and 0.30 mM. Further, four SP samples were prepared with the addition increasing TFA concentration. For each solution, we used a UV light source to generate MC in the solution and waited for the sample to turn into a different color.…

The burette and pipette were then washed to ensure accurate results. Subsequently, HCL and NaOH were poured in the beakers by a professional to avoid injuries as HCL and NaOH are both highly concentrated solutions, any spills on the skin can cause severe burns. Once all the solutions were organised, the burette and pipette were set up. The burette was safely held using a boss head to avoid any spills. According to the ratios, five different solutions were poured into separate conical flask.…

The dehydration of an alcohol to an alkene follows a two step elimination reaction. The first step is determines the rate of the reaction and is dependent on the formation of the carbocation. In this experiment, the carbocation intermediate forms as the alcoholic hydroxyl group is protonated with acid, and dihydrogen oxide leaves. After this unimolecular dissociation step, a proton from one of the adjacent carbons is captured to reform the acid catalyst, and the elimination reaction is complete with the formation of the double bond. Water is distilled out of the reaction to promote a high yield of 4-methylcylohexene. By removing water, the reaction is forced in the forward direction due to Le Châtelier’s Principle. In order to determine…

The melting point of a compound is the temperature at which the solid is in equilibrium with its liquid. A solid compounds changes to a liquid when the molecules acquire enough energy to overcome the forces holding them together. A mixture melting point is useful in confirming and used to indentify an unknown compound, which we will be doing in this particular experiment.…

Procedures Part A: Ten milliliters of 6M Sodium Hydroxide was added to two milliliters of methyl salicylate in a test tube. A white, crystal-like precipitate was immediately formed. Even upon shaking, the solution held its structure. The test tube was placed in a water bath containing boiling chips for while swirling the contents occasionally. The test tube was removed after 20 minutes. The precipitate no longer remained; the solution was now a pink liquid. The contents of the test tube were poured into a beaker to cool for approximately five minutes. Once cooled, 25 milliliters of 6M Hydrochloric Acid were slowly poured into the beaker.…

After complete addition of the sodium hydroxide, the mixture was left to stir for a further 30 minutes after which we reduced the stirrer speed to a gentle spin and water (2ml) was added and then stirred for a few more minutes. The content was transferred to a separatory funnel (30ml), using water (5ml) and dichloromethane (5ml) to complete the transfer. The mixture was shaken and left to settle, the organic layer was removed to an Erlenmeyer flask and the aqueous layer was extracted once more with dichloromethane (5ml) and then combined with the previous organic extract. The combined organic layers were dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, transferred through a Hirsch funnel into a filter flask (25m) attached to an aspirator. Filter paper was used to stop the drying agent from passing through the funnel, and the Erlenmeyer was rinsed with dichloromethane (1ml) and was poured over the drying agent in Hirsch funnel. After all the solvent went in the filter flask the aspirator was turned off, and the filter paper with…

In the lab, four test tubes were used. They were numbered one through three and each test tube was marked at 1cm, 3 cm and 7 cm marks. The catalase was added to each test tube to the 1 cm mark. Then HCl was added in the first test tube till it reached the 3cm mark. The same measurements were used to fill the second and third test tubes, where distilled water was added to the second test tube and NAOH to the third test tube. Each test tube was let to set on the rack for 5 minutes, after which H2O2 was added to each test tube to the 7 cm mark. Each test tube was swirled post H2O2 addition and set on the rack for 20 seconds before measuring the height of the bubbles formed by the reaction.…
