The film 12 Years of Slave is based on the life of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) born a free man in upstate New York, was a laborer and also an accomplished violin player. In 1841 he was drugged, kidnapped, and subsequently sold into slavery. For the next twelve years he exhibited courage, determination, endurance of extreme cruelty and unimaginable hardships before returning to his wife and children. During the 1840's era, there some free Blacks who reside in the North that lived in deplorable conditions due to repressive laws. Consequently, free Blacks were treated like underclass citizens and lived in debt and poverty; even the lowest white person could threaten or beat a free Black person.     12 years a slave and Lincoln both show two different perspectives on slavery. 12 years of slave focuses on the view from slaves and how it affects their lives. Slaves have a more personal connection to slavery, which we can see when Solomon is separated from his family.
